broken parking pole

Broke my parking pole while parking. It snapped at the base connecting the pole. I have the broken thread removed . All I have to do is to find someone to rethread the pole so it can refit to the base. Where can I go for such a repair ? If someone direct me to a place will be very appreciated.

The pole is crome plated, which makes if HARD. I think you will be hard pressed to find someone who will vollunteer their die to cut thread on that plus... it is metric (making it rare) and it is large (expensive die when they get that big). I think welding or a new pole may be cheaper.

Yes Rudy,thanks for your reply. I cannot get it welded cos of the material. So I have to try to have someone he can rethread it ( if I can ..) or have to buy a new one and it is not always easy too. The pole does help parking .

What about having a new one made? A rod with a clamp or thread on the end shouldn't cost much.

Isn't it that chrome is skin deep? Go to a machine shop, have them grind off the chrome and then rethread the bare metal. I think that should work.

What ever happened with this pole? Mine snapped off today, I think due to the weather changes (-18 yesterday to +5 today) and I saw it dangling while driving on the highway. I just thought it was loose, but when I stopped and touched it, it fell off into my hand. The bottom was full of water so I think the freezing cold expanded it and made it snap - or some punk ass kid on my block felt tough last night. Anyway, it split in a weird spot and I am wondering how to fix it. Any suggestions? I was thinking a rod could be lathed to fit inside both ends and then run a bolt through it in the top and bottom halves. Sounds expensive to me though. Anyone know the cost of a replacement if it can't be fixed? Anyone have a replacement they want t part with? Thanks

Hi Craig,

My one broke before at the same point . It did leave portion of the thread in the base . I have the thread removed and put back the upper piece (slightly shortened ) into it and secured with locktie ( spelling not sure is right ). It is good ever since fixed. I have a workshop at the place I work and they fixed it for me.

but it depends on the I.D of the holes. You could possibly JB weld the cane joint in place on either side. Can you measure the I.D's of each side with a caliper? I also have another idea. There is a machine shop with very reasonable rates that could make a fitting for you, but we need to know the thread type and pitch.

Awesome idea. Only problem is that I do not have a caliper. I have some family coming out for the holidays though and he has one for sure. I will get you some measurements then. As to thread type and pitch...? I don't really know what to do about that one. I should just send it to you and see what magic you can work (expenses covered of course).

Figure out the dimensions below with the calipers and we'll go from there. If you use some metric bolts and try out the threads, you'll figure out what thread it is.

There may be a simpler solution for you Craig.

If I were you, I'd just remove the broken threaded end off the upper piece. That upper portion is narrower than the lower piece, also the lower piece is tapered and you'll have a tough time getting an insert to fit snug. Once you've removed the broken threaded piece place the upper into the lower and see how much play there is. I would find a rubber epoxy of some sort that you could fill the lower with and just simply insert the upper in and allow the epoxy to set. Just make sure it sets straight. Not only would you have a quick, cheap fix, but you'd then have a rubber mounted parking pole.

We have a product that would work great for this, we call it pro seal. I'm sure that it's not available at your local Lordco but if you look for an equivalent product it would work fine. If you get stuck I may be able to round some up at work and send it to you. LMK if you want to go this route, I can PM you more detailed instructions.
