I need help with my TPS

So a few weeks ago I found out about adjusting the TPS. Did it and it worked awesome for 2 days then it went back to crappy shifting and over revving. So I tested it again and found that when I connect the voltmeter I was getting no reading and it would make a click noise. Fastforward now to today and I got a used one that works for sure, put it in turned the key to have power and I am still getting no reading and a clicking noise. I am so frustrated right now. Every time I connect the negative to the negative terminal on the battery it clicks. Just one click every time I connect it and measures nothing. Can someone please help me out here before I lose my mind? Here are some pictures fo what I am doing: EDIT- I now realize that I was using the voltmeter incorrectly. New problem listed below.

Hi Cregan,

I only know a little bit of electrical . I have done my TPS . To me seems that you have plug in the wrong side of the positive on the voltmeter. Please try the right corner side and turn the dial to 20 instead of 2. Hope that helps.

there is a break somewhere either a wire is frayed or fuse/relay no connecting

As davidwwc said you are trying to measure the current not the voltage and the ampermeter is causing a shortage as it is supposed to do when measuring the current. Move the red probe to the right terminal which is labeled 'V'.
PS. There is no need changing the dial to 20 as you are going to adjust the voltage to <1V.

About an hour after posting this I realized in my raging determination that I did infact have the wires to the voltmeter wrong. IDIOT! Anyway, got the used one in and I can't get it to adjust below 1.5. Any suggestions on what to do with this latest snag? Thanks for your help guys, I appreciate it.

You could try going to an electronics store and pick up a 5k potentiometer (pot) and install it inline with the wire. Adjust it to read the correct voltage and lock it in place. Temporary fix until you get a new one...?

We did this on a friends Cummins and it works awesome...total cost is 12.00 and maybe a good solution.

Just an idea $12.00 is better then $200.00 and I cannot tell you how nice the adjustable shift points are towing, driving, hills etc..

Thanks Trevor - Jesse sent me that the first time I adjusted it. Very good illustrated instructions. My problem is that the lowest I can adjust the new/used TPS is 1.50. It goes between 3 and change down to 1.50. Why would that be happening? How can I get it to go lower without having to drill out the holes, as I have read on the overseas sites people do, to get it to go lower. This one is borrowed until my new one comes in, so I cannot modify it.

Saw that on the other thread about transmission issues that I started. Very cool idea, but I am totally not that electrically or mechanically inclined. I would love to do it as I have two empty slots on my dash next to the steering column, but I am really afraid right now that whatever I touch turns to crap. Seems to be the trend lately.

I don't see how this mod helps. Now someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the TPS is designed to vary the voltage throughout the throttle range. The way the Dodge guys have it set up, you'd have to be on that pot to vary the voltage constantly.

If you put the pot inline, you could set the resistance at rest, and as long as your TPS still adjusts throughout the range evenly and it would provide the proper setting for the particular throttle setting.

This would involve: one cut wire, two joints soldered, adjusting pot for proper TPS setting, locking the pot and done.

Maybe I'm just too simple and I'm missing something.

I going to play an 'ignorance' card on this play: what is "TPS"? I've been trying to follow along, and I think it's something to do with the transmission, but because nobody has spelled it out, I still don't really know what you're talking about. And I suspect others don't as well.

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor. Its a sensor to shift from 3rd gear into overdrive on an automatic transmission when reach a certain speed . Some research on the term will explains better.

After some conversation with Fishtank we think we have figured out why the new/used one does not work. On the bottom of the TPS is a small rubber boot and inside the boot is a little plastic adapter. When you get a brand new one there are few little different coloured adapters that come with it. Each adapter will allow you to set the voltage at different levels. The adapter I have on my old one is red. I have tried to transfer it over to this other TPS as it was sent to me with no adapters. While red appeared to get the voltage within setable range on the my old one it does not work on the newer one. White is apparently the colour of the adapter you need. Make sense? Clear as mud? Hard to explain without pictures. So, now I wait for my new TPS and it's multi coloured adapters, or a white one to try on the used TPS I've got to use in the mean time.

It's actually used for all the shift points. I found this out while playing with the replacement of mine and the various plastic pieces associated with it. Without the proper voltage it won't even shift you out of 1st.
