Side Window Retaining Nut Alternative?

Post by psilosin »

So the nut that holds the side window on fell off somewhere between westbank and penticton so now its just flapping around. I assume this has happened to others as Mardy did warn me that this happens a lot on the L400.

Anybody have a good recomendation for a quick substitute part that I can just find off teh shelf at the hardware store that will do until I can order and receive the actual part? Raining today so I don't feel like tinkering... :-D

When you find the proper replacement let me know, I've got three that are cross threaded and rattling around loose.

I'd pull one of the ones you still have, look at the pieces and go to the bulk nuts and bolts and washers section of Cambodia Tyre and make up something (use a flat-headed or rounded bolt so some cheeky bastard doesn't undo it from the outside).

Be sure to use a lock washer to hold it all in place, otherwise it'll just work itself loose again.

Well my extra ghetto superr delux temporary solution was a 1/4"-20 Rubber Coated Captive Nut I got at Rona for $2.04. Its width is equal to the opening in the window glass and then has a flange at the end to keep the glass in place. Seemed to thread on no problem. However the captive nut is too long so the window is still loose and can move about 1cm back and forth but thats alot better than 6+ inches and at it will keep the window from falling off. Not a long term fix but it keeps the L400 in the game. 8-)

I have not heard of this yet. Do I have to check my nuts? (I know I just wanted to write it. 8-) ) I actually don't think I have ever opened the back windows since owning.
