Advice needed on 2 leaks!

Post by CREGAN »

Now I know there are some active topics about the subject I am about to bring up but I need options, as I am extremely frustrated right now. Let's get to the start of the story:

I have had a power steering leak for a long time and it kind of went away over the summer. Three weeks ago I noticed a huge puddle starting to form on my driveway of what appeared to be PSF. I thought I would take it in to my local shop and have it checked out. Here is where it gets fun (So fun I want to drive off a bridge). It turns out, and I have been able to view it, that the injection pump is leaking (mechanic described it as pretty wet) at the back where the fuel injection pipes come out one other spot but I don't know what it is called and I can't describe it, and dripping onto the power steering rack thus giving me a mixture of PSF and Diesel in my ever expanding puddle. I am looking for options here, and as I see it I have only two, so if you all have any more please feel free to reply here or PM me as I really don't want this to turn into a huge fight.

Option 1: Have it repaired here locally at most likely a huge expense. Huge expences right now will likely cost me my marriage because of this van.

Option 2: Wait on it. Just deal with the huge puddle and shitty diesel milage. I am going out to Tofino in August of next year so I can try to arrange a repair date at a Vancouver or Van Island repair shop and have it dealt with then.

Any ideas, options, opinions? I really don't know what to do know as I have been dealing with a constant stream of issues with my van since the first week I got it. I am $4500 into repairs right now and don't know how much more I can handle before I fill a gas can, park it in a field, and roast some marshmallows over the burning carcass. I love my van but I am getting so disappointed and discouraged. Please help. Like I said if you want to reply, great. If you want to PM me, that is totally great too. I am looking for some sollutions, not rage - I have enough of that for the world right now. Thanks all.

Craig

EDIT: Let me clarify. I don't have the expertise to do some of the stuff suggested by Jesse on the other threads and I live in Alberta (not exactly the Deli-Meca). I am a backyard mechanic and I need advice. Do I take it to get fixed now, do I wait and get it fixed in the summer, or do I leave it alone. That is what I am looking for. Recomendations and prices are greatly appreciated as I don't have a lot of cash thanks to all the other things I have fixed.

The IP on my Hilux Surf started to drip drip drip a couple summers ago. The Australian quick bush fix was to throw a couple bottles of engine stop leak in the near empty fuel tank and run it around town for a bit before refueling. Leak immediately almost fixed itself. It is still letting a bit of air by a seal so morning starts are a bit smokey and rough for the first 10 seconds or so, and if I leave it sitting for more than a week or two I will have to pump the fuel filter a bit before starting but there is no more diesel leaking out and onto the ground. Still the same 2 years later.

I believe that the WTF comment was directed at another post (user's conduct did not meet the standards of the forum, and therefore the user + his posts have been removed).

If it's leaking at the rear of the ip, it's possible the injector lines are not tight enough. (it's a cone/compression seal, not rubber).

Undo them, clean everything and then tighten them back on and check for leaks.

As for the post that was removed, it is a recurring issue that does not get the attention it deserves.

New members should not be able to post for x amount of days, especially this type of hate-posts.

Hi Craig,
Sorry to hear that. I think I am not in proper position to give my idea for your issues.
But I would say you have to remedy your problem as soon as possible.

1. Power steering leaks( long term issue )
You may get a power steering seal kit ( part number MN103434, $200-$230 original ) from part dealer and let your mechanic fix or you can do it by yourself.

2. Fuel leaks
First you need to spot leaky area while engine running after full cleaning.
If IP is not the case, you can fix it locally.
If your IP is leaking, you can take IP out ( little bit hard, but matter of time ) and send it to Vancouver for rebuilt( no cost if warranty honored, or max $500 for complete rebuilt )

IMO you don’t need to put off fixing this problem till next summer season.

Just my thought.
