New dual side exhaust...

Well, did this just prior to my previously posted mishap of wrong fuel... but wanted to nevertheless post some pics of my new dual side exhaust.

- The Van sounds way better... there is a constant bit of turbo-whistling...
- You can really hear the turbo spooling up when stepping on the gas
- I extended the tail-pipes just enough beyond the side of the van (maybe an inch or so) that the rear wheel doesn't get too black from the soot
- The Delica has a small but noticeable power increase - this leads to the tranny kicking down earlier on the uphill (I need to change this)
- With the old exhaust I would reach approx. 110kph at 2'900 rpm... now I reach 120kph at 2'900 rpm...
- Fuel economy is about the same (maybe I step on it a bit more, because there is a bit more punch to take advantage of)
- With some of the other Deli's I saw with side-pipes, I noticed tail pipes are positioned pretty low - about half way between body of Van and road
- I didn't like this and asked muffler shop to mount tail pipes higher... they are about 1.5 inches below body of Van
- Entire system cost me $ 350.00 at a muffler shop in Port Moody
- Spray painted exhaust tips with black high-temp spray paint...
- Very happy with the new system...

Looks good...not sure how exhaust effects highways speed unless with the old exhaust it the throttle was so open that it stayed out of OD???

@thedjjack... good point, I have no idea how the exhaust/backpressure/gas-flow/transmission/highway-speed ratio and dynamics work... but it is a fact... I was 10 kph faster at the same RPM than I was before...

I talked with Jay and Christine from Tardisdeli and Jay had told me about his observation that their Van was doing about 10 kph more at same engine revv's after they had installed a free-flow side-dump exhaust on their Tardis-Deli...

I never had it stay out of Overdrive... in fact I have had my own Overdrive saga that I posted about on the forum about a year ago - but this is all fixed and not an issue anymore... However, without overdrive you would never reach 120kph (certainly not on my Van) and certainly not at 2'900 RPM...

No idea how it works - but it works...

When I changed over from the stock pipe to the two and a half inch mandrel I didn't really notice a difference in performance, apart from the engine running a little cooler but the RPM didn't change. However she looks and sounds a lot cooler, too. The duel pipes look sexy on your wagon ~ she's bound to go a little faster with those on!

Something's wrong there. Going from stock to 2.5" full exhaust will net a noticeable difference at the pedal. That's been confirmed on a dyno and by the many who upgraded.

pretty cool, I straight piped my L400 and it made a HUGE difference in power the engine is making more low end torque and the turbo spools up much faster than before.

I'd say it makes quite difference. Following behind you after the last meet I could tell that your vehicle wasn't stock. Minimal power increases can play tricks with your head though.

Nope. 120 has always been three grand, 100 has always been 2,600 and the accelerator pedal performance didn't change. The engine runs cooler, her tail end looks a little sexier and the turbo sings more. Although I wonder if back pressure changed a little ~ I only say that because I noticed that with the old pipe 80 was typically two grand but with the new pipe it is slightly over two grand, less than 2,100 and not always ~ sometimes it's still two grand, just not as much.

I think that's because I tweaked the fuel supply and Edwin stepped the IP forward when he rebuilt it. Also I had a quarter inch piece of aluminium seal welded over the EGR's intake manifold platform and made a brass gasket for the exhaust manifold plate so she's really tight.

Still not as hot as Chris's two smoking barrels!

the rpm and speed will not change because the exhaust was upgraded. Rpm and speed can only change with gearing and tire size.

What does change is the added horsepower and less restrictive exhaust flow which improves the van's acceleration and power

If you do not notice this from a stock exhaust, something is not right as I gained 7hp on the rear wheels at the dyno and was able to advance an additional 15km/hr over a stock exhaust on the same road

This is because the stock exhaust is restrictive. 2.5" and it opens up and breathes better.

Possibly too many open cans of paint inside your Delica after the install?

those side exhausts look pretty mean! Regards to power, you will indeed have more horsepower if its larger pipe (more flow-less backpressure) but speeds at revs will not be affected - neither will top speed. it indeed depends on gearing

Looking for opinions on what people have found to perform the best, look the best, sound the best and one other thing I'm working to avoid is the back of my white van and the white trailer I pull being covered by soot. Not looking to run a stack up the back of my van either!

Jeez...a stack up the side of your van...I think if it was done right it might look pretty good...but it would only have to be done right....unfortunately none of us know what this "right" looks like.
