removing L400 speaker grills/mesh

Post by joedelica »

Hi Folks,

Would anyone know if I can remove the grills/mesh without removing the door panels?
Reason being is that I am looking to install speakers on the outside of the speaker mounts rather than under the grills similar to Psilosin (sent him a message but no reply yet). Just want to minimize having to replace or repair door clips/plugs.

Cheers,

Joe

Sorry been so busy smuggling small arms into Syria the last couple weeks I didn't notice your PM... 8-)

Unfortunately yes you have to remove the door panel to get at the screws that hold on the plastic speaker cover + grill (and remove the old speakers). Once you remove the speaker covers the metal grill itself is just pressed/glued into place so just have to get a grip and rip it out. Then if I rememeber I had to cut out much of the honeycomb of plastic from the speaker cover to get it to work as a speaker mount for the kickers. Hope that helps.

Mission accomplished; grills removed.
Wow, didn't realize it would be such a task to remove them from the speaker grills! No flimsy metal here, and heat pressed in as well!
New Kicker speakers mounted and wired in.

How do I remove the door panels? Also, what size should I get for my front (door) speakers? I 'ave L400 LWB '95. I pulled the back ones out and I'm still looking for something shallow enough to fit. SIZES would definitely help.
BACK: 9x6 with a total depth of 3 in or less, unfortunately for the sound quality.
FRONT: ?

I already replaced the tweeters in the ceiling and the dash board. A bit of a tweak and and immense improvement.

But how do I remove the panels?

Oh...joy...is this what I'm in for now that I want to replace the speakers in mine?

What about the rear speakers...similar grief?

One of the rear one I did get out. Not very difficult but the panel did have to come out. I can take pics if interested. It's been like this for a while until I finish my thorough research of speaker sizes :)
