Bigger problem that expected...

Bigger problem that expected...

Post by psilosin »

I haven't even looked at my L400 since the fan blades started smacking into the engine. On the initial quick glance I had though that the belts had jumps ahead a position into the vacant AC belt pulley and caused an imbalance leading to the smacking. But today I had a closer look it looks like it is worse than that...it appears the belts did not jump, but the entire lower set of pulleys has shifted forward toward the radiator and that is why the fan is hitting them. WTF. How does this happen? When it got its import service was something not tightened up properly? I am assuming this is teh same design as my Surf and these lower pulleys are part of the harmonic balancer and bolt onto the crankshaft? Now am I looking at disassembling the entire god damn front end to get access to the engine? The dealer provided Lubrico warranty is of course useless since I changed my own oil so it's void and I can't drive it to Mardy. Is there an easy way to get in there or is it as much of a pain in the ass as it looks?

Damnit this was a horrible purchase! One thing after another...

Common issue just like with the L300's and toyo's. On our four L400's I've replaced two of them.

Replace the crankshaft pulley with a new one. Yours has separated.

You only have to remove the fan shroud, clutch fan and belts to get it out. Not a big job. Just need the right tools - BF bar/socket - crank engine to crack pulley bolt and remove - tighten new one to 120+ ft lbs. same as with the L300. Detailed instructions somewhere in the L300 tech section.

Ask John at RMI how many he sells. A LOT !

Can it be accessed with radiator etc in place or am I looking at full frontal nudity?

Sh!t man! I almost had a hemorage when I was reading your initial post but it looks like it might not be such a pain in the arse. Still a pain just not as bad 8-) . Man I am glad Delica-pedia Jesse is around here. Life would sure be a lot more difficult without him. Hope it works out for you Brad. I want to finally see that beast on the road. If you need moral support or just a pep talk drop me a line, looks like the beer holding is already covered :-)

i just did the same job on my L300, took about 2 hours to do the swap for me being the first time i had looked at this motor with no manual. actually the hardest part and most time consuming was loosening off the alternator. I assume it is the same for the l400. at least on a positive note you seem to have got to it before any major damage.
if you are going to keep using that fan, check to make sure there is no cracks in the blades or any other damage so you dont end up taking out the rad after you get this job done.
hope it goes well.
Cheers,
Reza

Last time I was at Amazing Auto's Mardy had lots of used fans. I'm sure all the dealers do as well if you need one...

Its always good to have a crew of helpers on hand to keep the beer safe.

Coincidence that just yesterday I got sucked into ordering a couple Scandanavian winter beer coozies (Skuuzi). They should come in handy to keep hands warm while keeping hydrated :-D

I'm making this public right now for you all to read:

"I will not guarantee any beer is safe while in my hands. I will not be held responsible for any loss in beer volume while in transit to, or from my hands, or while in my possession. Although it is not my policy to drink anothers beer, it has been known to happen on occasion. And routine mistakes have been made on my behalf by passing back the wrong container which yielded a lesser volume than the owner previously recalled, for those instances I apologize. However, I have yet to be found fully at fault, or responsible in any way in these circumstances and have been acquitted in all prior cases. I am a use at your own risk beer holder but my alter ego is an opportunist, so by reading this, consider yourself to be duly warned."

hi, L300 and L400 has the same design harmonic balance with rubber in between the crankshaft and crankshaft pulley.
psilosin, i did check all my l400 when it arrive in canada.
this issue with harmonic balancer for L400 is not cover with the warrantty as this is not a power train.
we never know when harmonic balancer will go.
thats why i service all the vehicle L300 or L400 when i change the radiator to avoid this problem.
but if this happen after that nothing much i can do. did try my best to check and service it.
as if this is unavoidable problem you encounter now.
i did replace many of this that some of my customer who buy from other dealer and other private sale.
nothing much we can do about this. you just have to check your car time to time
as we got this vehicle as a used one.no brand new. this thing happen not only to you,but many of them happen like this.
so dont fell bad as your not the only one.you own the vehicle for more than 6 month. not bad.
not like other people who buy from other dealer or private sale that has worse problem and issue they encounter when they
buy the car, many problem like headlight never change, radiator is rotten, water bottle is about to burst, fan belt is crack, injector is plug, injection pump seal and timing not properly dont, shock is no good the vehicle bounce everytime it hit the poddle and turning side ways when you are running
little bit fast on the curb and many more issue that dont need to share to you. as there is worse problem over there than your car.
all this vehicle need a service thats why i service all my vehicle before i sell.
i did full service on your vehicle but nothing much i can do as this is a used car .
sometime thing happen that nobody want.
even a new car not all of them they do the warrantty as this is not a power train issue.
i know the frustration but this is a used car that we are dealing.
as jessie say he has this problem also when he buy the car from japan when it arrived you can see it and check, then replace it.
you have to check your vehicle time to time. as a seller we dont have a control on this as you are the one using the vehicle.
i did try my best to avoid this issue.by doing the service and explaine to you what i did when you pick up your vehicle.
if you need the balance shaft pulley i do have original balance shaft pulley in stock now.
hope this help
cheers;
Mardy
