Need help with Alternator please...

Hi folks,

What is the best way to remove and replace the alternator on an L300? Is it a hand scratching endevor or is there an easier way?

What should I be removing if anything?

No easy way other than from underneath and behind but I remember removing the top radiator shroud did help with any effort needed from above.

It's a foul tongued hand scratching adventure for sure. Just be fuelled up with patience or have alcoholic fuel near by, you'll get through it.

Careful some one took out a few teeth dropping it on face.

I got it out! it took me about 2 1/2 hours but I still have all my teeth.

Jason, Sorry I didn't contact you but your post came through as I was up to my arms in Delica motor.

I don't know where to get a new alternator yet but when I figure it out I will PM you with my number and we can drink beer, talk Delicas, kick tires and put an alternator in. Sound ok??

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHERE I CAN GET A REBUILT ALTERNATOR AROUND VIC (for an L300 dual battery)?

What I did was:

Removed the drivers seat and the plate it sits on (have to mess around with e-break and gas flap thingy),
Removed the fan (very smart),
Got to the tensioner bolt and the one that holds it to the frame from the top,
Took off hoses and vacuum line to vacuum pump along with alternator electronics from underneath.
Fiddled around with it from the top to loosen it off frame (swearing lots).
Pulled it out from underneath...keeping my pretty face clear!
Removed vacuum pump from alternator in the sunlight (also smart)

Thats it.

I hope I never have to do this again...but I know I will.

It isn't necessary to remove the driver seat. What were the benefits of doing this? A headlamp and small arms work well. The flap on the inside of the wheel well is definitely handy to have if your elbows don't bend backwards.

I removed the driver's seat and plate it sits on and found it easier to undo the tensioner bolts and the one that holds it to the frame. Partly because I'm right handed and I find it easier to have my palm facing what I'm working on rather than my knuckles (if I approach from the passenger side to get at it).

Also I will be able to do some much needed house cleaning on the driver's side of the engine and below the seat.

All in all the seat removal was the quickest and easiest part of the entire operation and I feel that it helped me out...but I'm a "first timer".

I think in the future I will probably leave the driver's seat where it is and use the wheel well access.

Yes, definitely loosening the tensioner bolt will help. The drivers seat is not much of a chore to remove (careful not to strip the bolts though, I had to re-tap mine). I'm right handed as well, I accessed it from the drivers side. How would you approach from the passenger side? As soon as I was able to slip the belt off the job got much easier. Congrats on getting it done! That was the first DIY job I did on mine and it was definitely one of the trickiest.

I was originally going to try to stand at the passenger door, reach across the top of the fan and somehow be super awesome... yeah..it didn't work. That's when I decided to remove the fan and driver's seat.

but i'm learn-in, i'm learn-in!

have a local shop rebuilt it. much cheaper than buying a new/rebuilt one.

You have many options and apparently many prices. $as low as $80 to rebuild yours and I've seen as high as $580 for a new one.

You'll see most parts long-term parts retailers have their own site/shop and you'll see some that mainly advertise on this forum/website - delicatrader. If you can, go with the retailers that have been around for at least 4 years+ Amazing Auto Imports, Coombs Country Auto, Maximum Overdrive, RockyMountainImports. Those are the big four. The others are relatively new or have been using various company names.

You'll see these words but they all mean the same thing : rebuilt = remanufactured = reconditioned = recored.

You can find them new between $5-600 but at that cost you can buy four or five alternators so it defeats the purpose. Alternators are electric/mechanical components and are considered consumables.

Best option: have yours rebuilt by a local shop
2nd option: buy a rebuilt one (usually you have to give them yours)
3rd option: buy new

Paid $220 for my local rebuild in Richmond including the oils seal for the vacuum pump...Other then the seal the rest is off the shelf parts...

hi, there is 2 type of alternator for L300,
one is 70 and 90 ampere alternator for L300 from japan.
i see some alternator came from asia. like china , taiwan and korea.
if your L300 is super exceed then its 90 ampere, if exceed only its 75 ampere.
i do carry rebuild one, came from original L300 alternator.
as the original alternator for me my choice is better than replacement.
as we do change new regulator, brass clean and tested.
i have in stock: with 1 yr warranty , unlimited kms on this, which is good.
