Muffler Requirements?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Muffler Requirements?

Post by nxski »

I'm looking at installing a new exhaust system and am wondering if I will need a muffler. It seems like it would be very simple to just run a 2.5" pipe the shortest distance possible and bring it out just behind the front driver side wheel. Is this a possibility or am I required to have a muffler?

Thanks

DO NOT DO THIS!!!

I am yelling that because you will not be able to hear if you do that. Adam had that exact setup on my Delica when I got it and it is too loud. When the window is open it is too loud.

Just put a high flow performance muffler in there. It makes no more power adding the muffler or not having the muffler. The 2.5L still has no power in both setups.

Just get a turbo/flow muffler at 2.25" inches. The muffler shop will be able to weld direct on the flange 2.25" inches pipe down to a muffler and a 90 degree bend pipe out in front of the rear tire/side.

I'm not too worried about noise, in fact I kind of like it (perhaps my youth talking). I'll look into that muffler set up though, I'm more worried about cost, I don't have a ton of money to spend on the vehicle...yet.
Thanks for the tips!

Put it this way. If you put a straight exhaust on it, you'll get pulled over by police sooner or later. It is VERY loud. So loud that you'll get noticed everywhere you go.

Ah, so loud enough that the police will require a muffler!? My cousin had once of those 'noisemakers' on the end of his exhaust and despite the fact that it was purchased legitamately he was written a ticket for creating too many decibels. As I'm not planning on breaking the speed limit (especially in an L300) :-D , would this not be considered legal by police? Is that why I would be pulled over? I notice hat a lot of trucks seem especially loud...

You will be sorry. It is loud enough to be pulled over. The police can just give you a VI (vehicle inspection). If they are nice about it you can drive it to the inspection. If they are not nice they can take the plates and tow it.

My muffler was like $50.00 or something from Lordco and took about 20 minutes to weld in.

Delica is not really a nice sounding motor. Merlin V12 or big block on open headers in a nice sound.

That was definitely the answer I was looking for! :-)
Sorry, I like noise and all but I'm not up for spending money because of a stupid decision.
I'm ordering some subs and an amp on Amazon. Have you heard of anyone sourcing mufflers through there?

If you want a quiet idle, smooth exhaust while cruising and a deep growl while accelerating, go with a good flow muffler with a 2 1/4" inlet and outlet.

This is the one I have and the sound is quiet at idle but a sexy growl when you stomp on the pedal.

If you want something that is close to the flowmaster 'growl' but 1/4 the price, get this one :

http://www.cherrybomb.com/products/turbo

Part # 16805 Cherry Bomb Turbo muffler (2 1/4" inlet/outlet offset/offset).

I think I paid about $35 at Napa when I got it and about $70 for a shop to install it with 2 1/4" pipe from the flange to the tip.

That's not a bad deal at all, I'll have to check that out. Thank you!

Any idea why this one has similar dimensions but a different part number and higher price?

I've ordered in the Lordco equivalent to the Cherry Bomb muffler with 2.25 in 2.25 out. Hopefully that will turn out to be good. It's coming in tomorrow and I can check it out then. 8-)

I just had a custom exhaust made and my muffler was installed. I can hear the turbo spooling and it's not too noisy, however I've noticed that when I turn the vehicle off I can hear a pop coming from the muffler. Is this normal?
Thanks

I suppose that could be it, I never heard it with the old exhaust system though. I've checked underneath and it's not hitting anything so I'm not too worried about it.

How's the L400 coming along? You've had your own little spot at CVI for a while now. Hopefully things are going along fine...
