Canoe mounting ideas?

Post by isaacvallee »

I am roofrackless and i want to take the ol' canoe out for a trip. What would be the best way to go about this without racks?

Thanks!

Foam feet and V-Straps. You can get them at MEC, $36 for 2 V-Straps and another $18 for four foam feet. That is what I used on my GMC Safari, but I wouldn't trust my Crystal Lite roof to the foam feet. Any sand on them and they'd scratch. too much compression might crack a window, etc. So I got a pair of Thule bars, and a pair of $3.50 rubber tie-downs from Crappy Tire. The V-straps secure the canoe to the rack and the tie-down offer that extra piece of mind that the canoe won't shift at highway speeds.

if you put a saffari rack on it you can put a canoe or anything on the rack and your gear in the basket of it. Those V straps from MEC work great.

What most have neglected to mention, unless you have a particularly squat Delica, is that you are going to have begin your canoe mounting idea with a ladder. :-P

Regardless, I wouldn't put it on the glass either, even with foamies. 'Twould be a shame to have to try to replace. Get yourself some roof bars - thankfully the Delicas have a rain gutter that accomodates the old-style roof bars.

I have a non crystal roof - and the paint is delaminating badly (white chalky look to it - basically major sun damage from Southern Japan). Looking into Rhino lining (truck bedliner) the roof from the gutter channels up and then going with the foam footies for my canoe. I've heard that Rhino Lining is cheaper than painting due to the tenacity of the material and less prep time required...and lack of colour choice - dark grey or nothing...fortunately that matches my Deli.
Good luck!

Im pretty sure Rino lining comes in different colors, http://www.rhinolinings.com/
grey is good for roofs, but also the dark colors are bad in the hot summers. Mind you dark roof is warmer in out 9 months of drizzle or cold of the interior.

Noted & tks - interesting. As mentioned, had not looked into this too far, but heard from other sources that it was the old Henry Ford school of colours (any colour available as long as it is black!).
