Company names - vote

Post by nxski »

Hi, I'm creating a construction company and don't wan't to regret the name. I have two options that I like and am turning to my close group of online peers to help me decide.
Thanks for your time,

Nick :M

Congradulations on this very brave step.

What type of construction are you doing?

It would make it easier to decide.

The first option rolls off the tongue better

What is the scope of work you plan on doing? Let me know and perhaps I can brainstorm some other ideas for you as well

I'll be starting off with design and contracting for residential buildings but I don't want to limit myself in the future either. Thanks for all of the replies!

I think it depends where you're planning on getting your business. If its mass advertising you are better off using a name that describes your niche. If your customers are earned by reputation alone, the name is not important as long as it is clear.

Many companies have two depending on their target market. One example: North Shore Gutters or North Shore Home Services, is also known as Edenvale Home Services so people from Richmond wouldn't be turned off. All have a fairly similar format for letterheads/webpages, but they're all different.

This vote is a bloody good idea. I should have done the same a couple months ago as I was Inc.ing.

But what I really want to know is when Nintendo Entertainment System Design & Construction builds me my first life giant NES console/house??!

Like This

But BIGGER!

After looking at NES pics.. it dawned on me that the L300 must have been modeled after it! I dug a little deeper on the web and I found proof in the Mitsubishi Design Archive from the 80's..

Thanks for the insight. I hope to do some advertising but mostly hope to be known by word if mouth. For now I'm going to pit a decal on my van and write off all of my upgrades etc as advertising. I was worried about posting name ideas online before I could secure them but as no one knows what the nes in my name stands for I should be fine. :-D

If you have a delica and a nontendo house u think you'd be set for life!

Good for you. I'm self employed and have my own company too, it can be a lot of work, and it can be a bit of a roller coaster at times - but very satisfying.

What are your design credentials? If it centers mainly around a knowledge of creating working and permit drawings and knowledge of part 9 of the building code - then I would not emphasize the design part of the name. I think you can leave the design part off all together and include it in a tagline or other part of your advertising. Most clients expect that if a good contractor can't do basic design, they will have someone available that can. This would give you more flexibility with your name too. It also keeps the name shorter - imagine how many times a day you will answer your phone with your company name - You may grow to curse every unnecessary syllable.

The other thing about the word "design" is that it is used for so many things, that it doesn't really mean anything. Are you Frank Lloyd Wright, or Mike Homes? Simple is best - really hone in on what your strength is - one word that summarizes what you do. Having said that - I named my company vurv design - doesn't say much about what kind of design I do. I often add the word studio "vurv design studio" so people get a better sense that I operate a small furniture studio - with a focus on high design.

Like you, most of my clients come by word of mouth (via the internet). The best kind of advertising.

Good luck!

Very good point, I may look at removing that. What I want to get into is the design build process and even if the project is too large to be considered as an architect I would still design it and just get an architects stamp for approval.

In terms of qualifications I would be considered a building technician with 7 years experience with autocad, I've submitted my own designs to city hall without any issues and I have a certificate for completing a course in revit as well. Because design is something I really want to do I figured it would be a good thing to add to the name.

Thanks to those who voted. I changed the options as per recommendation and just noticed that all votes have then been deleted. I will not change this again as the name will be one of these. If you could re-submit your votes that would be great.
Thanks again,

I like that name and the slogan but

I think I'm going to try to shorten it rather than elongate. I'll incorporate your idea into my pitch though! 8-)
