startup after winter sleep

Post by negativentropy »

Hi all, just wanted to share in observation I made yesterday.

Background info: I left Canada last November for a trip to Europe and my Delica was put into storage over the winter. I did all the things you are supposed to do; full fuel tank, tarp underneath and over the vehicle, tires off the ground, etc etc. I came back from Europe after 6 months and was eager to get the Delica running again. I replaced the battery, checked the fluids, lowered the vehicle onto its wheels, turned the key and vvrroooom it started on first try. So needless to say I was very pleased.

The strange thing is, when I normally start my Delica (especially in cold weather) it smokes a little at first but on this particular start, after 6 months of storage, it didnt smoke AT ALL. It was the cleanest start ive ever had on the vehicle... What does this point to as the source of my otherwise smokey starts? The only thing I can think of is that over the course of the 6 month storage the leaked diesel fuel which otherwise causes smokey starts had time to evaporate?

I started the Delica a second time that day and it returned to its usual smokey start (nothing extreme, just a bit of white smoke for a few seconds)

Cheers

When starting a diesel the IP dumps extra diesel into the chamber to insure that there will be enough to start, which is why you see a puff of smoke ~ it's diesel that is not completely burnt in the form of soot. I would think that after sitting for so long the IP only managed to inject a sufficient amount of diesel into the chamber on the first try? Just a wild guess.
