Stop shopping at Wal Mart.

They (and companies like them) are decimating the North American middle class in the name of low prices - noticed how all the decent middle class manufacturing jobs have moved overseas. We get cheap consumer goods, at the expense of our productive manufacturing base.

I stopped shopping Wal-Mart after watching this documentary (and doing some fact checking). The film is somewhat biased, but does present some food for thought.

Wherever you by your oil, I found very usefull the 9.5 liters Jug from Shell.

For all you politically correct voices out there: if you are so upset about Wal Mart, stop shopping at the following banners immediately:

- Canadian Tire (all made in china - plus they pay low wages and have poorly trained staff)
- Real Canadian Superstore (aside from food items, all stuff is from China - they pay even lower wages and their staff is very poorly trained and not treated fairly either)
- Princess Auto (not sure about the wages, staff seems a bit more knowledgeable, but all their stuff comes from china - thus exporting manufacturing jobs overseas)
- Future Shop - ( again not sure about wages, but can't be much better than WM & Co. - and all they sell is made in china or taiwan etc.)
- Zellers ( like walmart, except it once was Canadian before it was swallowed up by Marks+Spencer... And now it'll be Target soon and it'll be just like Wal Mart - plus they have the worst trained staff and pay the same horrible wages like everybody else)
- And if you think that Home Depot and all the others are any better, think again...

Oh, and I almost forgot... Don't you dare ever eating a Tim Hortons Doughnut again, or a McDonalds burger... Or A&W, or Subway, or Wendy's ... Or any other fast food for that matter... they all pay very poor wages (horribly poor in fact) and the staff works hard, long hours in tough environments...

Ironically, in the 70-ies and 80-ies the Japanese were the bad guys... Who bought a Japanese vehicle was "taking away" north American jobs... Maybe we should all drive Chrysler Minivans or similar North American vehicles (which many are made in Mexico, or consist of parts that largely come from China or Taiwan)...

But we all love our Japanese made Delica's, Safaris, Pajero's, and what have you... It's so hard to be politically correct...

Well put. Do what you can, when and if you can. On the clothing thing, I have the same MEC fleece that I got in 97! You know back when quality was as important as moral issues.

If I may ad to that:

Look in your plate and ask yourself, is my food being grown locally, if not, your participating in what you preach to be wrong. Garlic from china, Orange from Florida, potato from Peru, mangos from central america and OH coffee from everywhere your drink is not fair trade

Seriously guys, If you want to give me bs about Walmart, do your own bread with responsibly grown ingredients, drive a canadian made bike, made of responsibly mined material, because petrol is at the top of death, famine, war, poverty. Grow your vegetable or buy them from a local farm. WORK for a company that values equity, social moral and is proactive in your local community. Buy only canadian made clothes, that was made with fair trade coton. Buy medicine that wasn't tested on animal. Reduce your own footprint by triple R reducing, reusing and recycling. Drop the cellphone because coltan production, an important mineral for cellphone production, is fuelling the war in Congo. Don't watch any kind of media because these guys are working with equipment that was made from minerals mined in poor countries. Take back your wife diamond because it's probably blood diamond. Try to live without product made from petrolium product (think about it, the amount of things made from petrolium)

So unless you have unlimited ressources to pay 6$ for free range eggs, don't give me BS about walmart because, remember that you drive a japanese car that wasn't built in Canada and did not contribute to those middle class job.

I think that if you want to have a cause, go big or go home. Bitching against one company is easy, changing ALL your life habits is an honourable. Picking on only one company is a very bad way to feel morally better because the product you don't buy at one place, you buy it at the other place that's probably not better.

That's my two cents and remember that the 9.5 liters jug is still very usefull wherever you buy it!
