I'm in for your Pop-Top forum! Actually, I need some ideas. I have a cargo box on the roof, and everytime, I have to empty it in order to lift the roof. I'm trying to find a system that would lift it mechanicaly. Nothing with air pressure or oil pump system, just a good ol crank. I was looking at the systems they use for the actual camper tent. But I don't know how I would set this up.

Any idea?

Hey friends,

There you go, some photos of our setup. I put in the cargo box our 1K Watts Honda generator, 2X 10L jerry cans, folding table, and other tarps, extra propane Coleman cans and odd miscellaneous.

I have the same 2 pistons that keeps the top up. So we have to get everything out of the box in order to open it. Even empty, the top is staying up, but you can see that it has a hard time, not fully open.

Anyway, if you have an idea for a mechanical system to lift it up, with 130lbs (more or less 30lbs) of stuff, throw it over here, I am at that point where I am willing to do the whole trial and error thing.

Cheers,

Fred and Kim

The struts or pistons are great without the cargo box. They’re actually hard to pull down. So I think that, changing the pistons for stronger ones would not be the solution, because it might be more difficult to close. So again, the idea would be to have a mechanical system that would lift up and close the top with either a crank or something else. I have been looking around on the web, and the only thing I can see is the pop top trailer camper that have that system to lift up the roof. But it seems to be bulky and also is made for the four corner of the roof.

Anyway... again, if you or anybody else would have an idea, it would be more then welcome. I may be willing to throw a flat of beer for anyone that find a system that would actually work hehehe...

Cheers guys and girls!

What I was planning to do and would recommend this to you guys (Ari and Fred) is to look at the VW westy's mechanical setup.

Ari, the struts are in great shape on Turtle so those are good. Putting a higher charge on those struts may not be a wise idea.

Basically, on the highside (rear), you would have a mechanical U-shape bar.

I've attached a complicated CAD 3D drawing to illustrate :-D

Yeah good idea!

I have also found the Lift Assist Kit at Gowesty and here is a video with 150lbs on the roof with only one kit installed; http://youtu.be/PJiTCkFXXnA You can have a dual system as well for heavier load. But your idea of the bar on the back might be helpfull too... you know in winter... snowfall... covering the roof with snow, making it heavier and the suddenly you wake up with the roof on your back... not fun... So at least it would block it from going down in case the lift kit fail. Hummm... I will have to see with my friend the welder and if it would work... jfarsang (Don’t know your real name), You might have earned yourself a flat of beer my friend!!!

I will also have to put clamps on the back and front attached to the roof and clamping on the actual gutter. That way the roof will not move as much while 4wheel driving...

I think I night get myself a little project for the summer!!!

Cheers,

Fred

Fred, it's Jesse.

The thing with the mechanical setup is that it will lock in place preventing the top from closing. :M

You can get somethIng similar to what Jesse suggested at most hardware stores. Essentially it's the same but does not have the crosspeice in the centre. They are rigid enough as is. I was looking at some smaller ones and they could handle up to 300-500 lbs drpending on the model. I'd post pictures but I'm on my iPhone...
