potential new owner with lots of questions

Post by numa_cruiser »

Hey everyone, just starting to think seriously about a Delica and have a bunch of questions:

1) It seems as though there is alot of resources and people co-operating regarding repairs, maintenance and parts. Are Delicas fairly maintenance/repair dependant or can they be relatively dependable? I need something that is reliable and won't nickel and dime me to death...I've already learned that lesson with a 1971 FJ-40.

2) I saw this question already on one posting but...Better to buy from a dealer who has already imported the van or work with an importer? Cheaper? Riskier? Suggestions for both options as to good people to deal with would be fantastic.

3) What is the difference between a Delica and a Delica Exceed/Super Exceed etc.?

4) Do all the crystal roofs ahve pull accross coverings? I saw something about what looked like a mechanical operated sun shade.

I'm sure I have a ton more questions and would appreciate responses from you out there who have the answers. I'd really like it if someone would be willing to talk on the phone, seems like it would be a more efficient way to cover alot of topics. Please let me know if you'd be willing to do that. Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

Most of your questions will be answered with a search. This thread was helpful to me viewtopic.php?f=9&t=309&hilit=

Good luck, Jason.

Why do you want a Delica?

The very best way to answer many of your questions, other than searching this and related forums (the Aussie one is full of information), is to go have a look at one. If you don't know what you're doing, you may prefer working with an importer. There is no substitute for seeing one in the flesh. Sit in one. Take one for a test drive.

Me? I was looking for something to replace my old VW Jetta, something that could carry cameras and telescopes and things, with 4- or all-wheel drive and some off-road capability. It came down to 2 finalists (Subaru Outback and Mitsubishi Delica, both worthy vehicles). A test drive settled it, though the Delica's somewhat extraterrestrial appearance didn't hurt. :-) I gave one of the importers a deposit in late July, and will take delivery this Saturday.

Hi, I'm not sure where you are located but I am on the Island , in Victoria, I am picking up two vans in richmond in about a week (hopefully , customs permitting) and if you want to take one for a drive BEFOR they go for any inspection here and see how they are when they come right from the source your welcome to come for a short drive. I like people to see how they look when they arive so they know nothing has been cleaned up in detailing, or repairs to hide any damage. there are more and more dealers selling JDM's in the Vancouver area so if you searching you should be able to find what your looking for , A Delica may or may not be for you. going for a drive and seeing them up close is the best way, either you will want one the moment you drive it or you will know its not for you. but you will know right away. Oh and be Very leary of the buying them befor they are off the boat. I've heard MANY horrer stories about those deals in the last month.
And if you decide to put a deposit on one that is coming in, just make sure its Refundable so you dont have any stress.
