Broken overdrive switch repair

Post by negativentropy »

Hi just wanted to share a write up I did on repairing a faulty overdrive switch. http://labilis.com/?p=213

If someone wants to duplicate the write up here (resize images and such) go ahead, I'm too lazy!

Good write-up!

Don't worry about not posting the idea directly into this forum - it's become common to just submit a link to the "outside". And it is easier than posting twice.

Thanks for the compliments - I had a Sunday with nothing to do so I figured what the hell - time to fix some of the nagging problems on the Delica.

Mardy; everything else is running well with the van - thanks again for a good one. I hope I dont blow up the engine with this propane injection otherwise I'll be contacting you this fall for a new engine =P
Actually come to think of it I'll be contacting you anyway - I need a block heater for the winter!

As for posting the write-up here - I just thought it would be nice if people could make comments right on the forum - but so long as people can find the information when they need it thats acceptable.

Ah thats not the guide I used, there is another one floating around as well (definitely not as detailed as the one you just linked to). I'm impressed the author went to the trouble to describe how to reassemble the switch - its a right pain in the ass.

Oh and i'm using a 5lb propane tank - made lots of progress today, found a place for the tank and made a cage to hold it in place - should be done for the weekend and the writeup will follow shortly after that...

I really appreciated this guide. Did the same fix, improved on it a bit as well. You don't have to break off the tab; there is a locking pin which can be extracted (and reused) with the right technique. You don't have to destroy the black cover either, although I have heat shrink that will fit. Also the friction fit of the switch is not the same for every unit; a little shimming may be required.

I have to say, the metal backing plate solution is pure genius. Easy to fab and probably better than original.

I know that this is a common issue locally because people are stocking the replacement part, at a whopping 150-200$. If you have a broken one I can refurb it for you. Just come by a shop night with pizza and beer.
