A must read...

Post by Aciled »

For all parents out there...

My six year old boy is going through the lying stage.

Some excerpts of articles that were passed along to us from our friends and G.P.:

- A liar will repeat the question for reassurance.
- Liars will sometimes imply answers instead of denying them.
_ Lying takes longer than telling the truth, so the time to answer may indicate a lie. Lying will take longer because liars need more time to think of an elaborate and plausible story.

- A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.

- A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and may turn his head or body away. • A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

- A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: “ I didn't do it” instead of “I did not do it”

- Liars sometimes avoid "lying" by not making direct statements. They imply answers instead of denying something directly.

- The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary details to convince you.

- If you believe someone is lying, then change subject of a conversation quickly, a liar follows along willingly and becomes more relaxed. The guilty wants the subject changed; an innocent person may be confused by the sudden change in topics and will want to back to the previous subject.

This is an excerpt from this site: http://www.statementanalysis.com/

"Statement Analysis is the most accurate way of determining if a person is lying in a verbal or written statement. A person cannot give a lengthy deceptive statement without revealing that it is a lie. This is because people's words will betray them. There are usually several ways you can phrase a statement. People will always word their statement based on all their knowledge. Therefore, their statement may contain information they did not intend to share. Even though they want to withhold information, people will give us more information than what they realize. Unfortunately, they sometimes give us more information than what we realize. The key is to listen to what people are telling you and to know what to look for in a statement."

- Lying is Easy
Detecting deception is also difficult because, despite what most people think, lying is very easy to do. Children learn to lie at an early age and they are very good at it

- And our skills at lying only increase as we get older. In fact, adults lie everyday without much awareness of what they are doing. Ironically, people lie so often that they actually begin to believe their own lies.

- Over-Confidence Provides Comfort, But It Hurts Accuracy
- Not only are people good at lying, but most people like to think that they can tell when the truth is being told.

Hope this helps! :M

I remember when my Ex's youngest was lying to me. There he was staring up at me and feeding me this line of bull Sh. The funny part was, he was using a familiar line. I know this because it was the same line I had used on my old man. The kicker is, at the time, I thought it was a bullet proof lie. Now 20 years later I am being fed the same line I used by him. You need to know that I was very upset over what had happened, but as i was looking down at him I saw in him, how he, (Like i had), thought this line was going to work. Hearing it now as an adult it was so funny how see through the line was. In order to stay mad at the situation I had to leave the room as I was about to start laughing. All I could think about was how my old man must have been trying to keep in his laughter while I was on my run to him..

BTW Aciled, the lying is not a stage, it will continue until they are out of the house...Work on this assumption when they reach the teenage years..... If the mouth is moving, verify!!!!!! LOL :)

It's a good thing you're catching him at an early age. If he adpots that train of thought, it will be there for a long time.

The next morning when the sun is rising, take him for a ride in your L400 import and explain to him the "why's" about lying.

If he really wants to know the why, then hopefully it will stick as he listens.

Interesting... However, I would like to point out that, while I don't defend lying, I point out that society would be destroyed without some amount of lying. Can you imagine if you told the truth all the time?

If you said what you were really thinking about someone? When your boss asks you what you think of him/her, imagine actually telling them that you think they are a @#$@#! You know you would not be around much longer!

Or telling a client that they are being a real @#$@#@#! Do you think they would be buying your products?

Or telling people things that you think are true, but that are extremely cold and could emotionally damage them in the long term?

Or if you are LGBT and living in the American Deep South, below the Missouri Compromise Line, in some place like Texas, and you have to lie to keep your job and not get assaulted? (Read the news reports, it does happen)

Sometimes a lie is the necessary grease for society, or it protects someone. Should, as in the last case, people have to lie? No, but sometimes it is very much necessary.

So, there you have it.... No, I don't defend lying. And Children should be taught to tell you the truth. But, this had to be pointed out.
