Delica engine on it's Deathbed (92 Exceed)

Looking for a little advice as to how to deal with the recent death of my 92 Delica exceed engine.

I took it in to Marigold auto for a oil change with only complaints of a subtle squeek. i thought was a loose belt. When they noticed a rattle in the engine, I had it inspected. Originally it was thought the crankshaft was fine but on further inspection the keyway in the crankshaft has been hammered out/flared open and is apparently not repairable. Although various low cost/short term jerry-rig solutions might be tried, the marigold consensus is to replace the crank or find a used engine. Is there sense in getting a second opinion?

I was hoping to gather opinions on how I should proceed. I bought the vehicle a year ago and it had been running great until now. It is otherwise in good shape and has about 150 000 km on it. I'm gathering that the only thing that makes financial sense (whether I keep the van or not) is to pony up the cash for the the replacement of the engine or bottom end. I suppose i'm also looking for leads on a potential used engines.

My life is on hold until this is sorted.

the crankshaft bolt loosening causing the pulley to vibrate leading to a worn key is becoming a common issue unfortunately

you're on the island. I would recommend to contact either Noel at Eviroimports (victoria) or Glenn at Coombs auto (up isld coombs) for a used engine.

Look at the Miata engine it has the same failure....

I looked at a Mazda 323 turbo that had the crank pully welded on and was still going 80,000km later...

New crank is the real fix...but you can always get a new motor later...

I personally think that a skilled welder could weld the woodruff in situ so that the pulley and gear could still be removed if needed. Since there are 2 woodruffs, on for each, the rear woodruff could be used to ensure the alignment of the front one, slide the gear forward so its over both, tack it, nudge it back tack it, and keep checking till its solidly welded.

A lot of work, and labour too, so maybe not the best, but depends how you're fixed.

1. Do NOT, under any circumstances, take it to Marigold for that work or any other. Speaking from very expensive experience here.
2. Call Glen at Coombs and at the very least, get a second opinion. Even if you need a replacement engine, he won't do you wrong. He replace our engine 3 1/2 years ago and we haven't had a lick of trouble with it.
3. (most important) See 1. Repeat....

I've found an engine bottom end up island. And think I will try and replace the crank etc instead of an entire new engine. I'm considering moving the operation up island as well for a variety of reasons. But not sure If I will attempt to drive the 2 hours with my sketchy crank or just fork out cash for a tow. .... we will see how all this plays out.

I would pull the power-steering and air conditioner (as long as the water pump turns with the alternator (do not over torque the belts) and then tighten the bolt and drive....

I think that over tightening the belts also may put extra stress on the crank pulleys....
