Started a couple months ago. Its in underside somewhere. Think its on front half of vehicle buts its hard to really tell. Doesn't appear to be engine related.
Would happen once in a blue moon, has increased over time. Only seems to happen at slower speeds. At highway speeds it seems to settle and goes away. Its like something is working itself loose but over time has gotten worse. Sounds like metal on metal.
Now its pretty regular but again only at slower speeds.
I've checked the brake pads, calipers and front wheel bearings and they all appear to be fine.
Friend said it might be the Transfer case, I sure hope not. Imagine that would be a fair bit of down time and cost.
Also mentioned it could be in drive train.
Not really sure what to look at for either one of those issues.
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Intermittent grinding noise increasing on Pajero
It could be the waterpump. My van is at CVI having that replaced right now.

Crank shaft? Ok, that gives me a good place to check.
I don't see how the water pump could make that sound but could be. I'll check that too.
Thanks guys, gives me something to work with.

Pajero Meet ***NOVEMBER 18th at IKEA COQUITLAM AT 7PM***
You will get lots of advice and help there. We are having a delica meet at same place, some of the engines are the same (depending on model and years), so heaps off handy owners.
If you update your profile with year and model, also location, I can then suggest local resources for you.
Christine.

Re: Intermittent grinding noise increasing on Pajero
It's the bearing inside the waterpump that makes a grinding sound according to Butch and Mardy. If that is the case you don't want to be driving it too much. Check your coolant levels too as mine was leaking.
I've also had the grinding from the loose crankshaft pulley as well and it's a very similar sound.

Re: Intermittent grinding noise increasing on Pajero
Humm ... my coolant does seem to be going down but I swear this sound is under the vehicle, like something might be shifting and hitting the drive shaft. I'm not saying thats it but seems like it. It really doesn't sound like its in the engine and it never happens when idling. Sometimes I'll hit a bump and sets it off. Its happening more though, like whatever it is is getting looser.nxski wrote:It's the bearing inside the waterpump that makes a grinding sound according to Butch and Mardy. Thanks for the tip! I'll check out the pump just incase.
Eventually I will find it and report back.

Re: Intermittent grinding noise increasing on Pajero
Solved the rubbing/grinding sound.
Turned out to be front left outside bearing.
The inner part of the bearing thats not supposed to rotate didn't quite have enough friction with the spindle and was spinning causing rubbing sound.
Hope it helps someone else find a mystery noise.
