Backwards Boost?

Post by solanoid »

So yeah,

I called AMA to boost the rolls rice (the battery terminals were really loose, and I think that caused it to loose its charge over the course of 10 days while it was parked) I was in the drivers seat, while dude connected cables. As soon he put them on, I noticed smoke start to come out of the back of the turbo timer box that sits on my steering collumn. I immediately told the guy to remove the cables.

I had my van taken to Apex, where they informed the that the van was boosted backwards. WTF!? They checked it out and had to change some fuses. Before I got the van back I had to leave town for work. My wife picked up the van and drove it home, she parked it, plugged it in, and left it there for 8 days untouched.

Today she went to start it up, no problem. She drove to 7-11, and when she came back out it would not start. Then she went back 5 minutes later and it started.... :-?

She took it back to Apex, they determined that the turbo timer is pooched, as well as the stereo, but the rest of the systems seemed to check out.

Are there any other possible effects by backwards boosting? My mechanic did put on my invoice that the van was boosted backwards, I have not contacted AMA ...yet

connecting opposite terminal/polls on 12V battery and a live on (running jumper truck) will cause a massive shock, sparks will fly and it's very noticeable. Not only that, but if kept connected, can cause an electrical fire and fry your whole electrical system.

You can use a battery to weld like that. That's how my dad welded in the bush. A battery, pair of cables and stick.

What most likely happened is the turbo timer you have is wired piss poorly to begin with and not grounded properly. When the guy attached the positive cable first (where the fused link of the turbo timer connects), it blew the fuse and the timer and took your radio along for the ride.

I swear, is this deja-vu or did this exact conversation take place not too long ago ? will have to check .. :-D

Remove the turbo timer completely and the spaghetti wiring it came with. Toss the radio and check the radio harness connections.

The most important connection of them all is the ground. If it's just 'okay' you can fry stuff. It must be 'rock solid' attached to either bare or solid chassis/metal.

BTW, in some cases loose terminals on a JDM rig usually mean the previous owner did not change out the old japanese batteries. Are your batteries canadian or still the old one's?

Thanks for the reply, and the insight.

Fresh batteries and alternator, the t.t. has been disconnected.

added the youtube clip in there.

glad it didn't take out anything else. Was it the original batteries that took out the alternator?

The batteries and alt were originals, and they crapped out the first -25 we had in 2011, not a single problem with the van since.

I am just really worried about my baby! is she gonna be ok doc?

You are alive! Haven't heard from in ages. Sorry to hear about the fried van. We need to meet up soon. I have a turbo timer that has only worked 3 times since owning the van. Each time was a surprise because I was just leaving it on and I would shut it down and pull the key and it would still run! Looked at it a little bit last summer but decided to just leave it off for now. Is AMA going to cover your Apex bill, because I can bet it wasn't cheap. Anyway- Lets cruise the twins together sometime!

Unlikely but try and recover your batteries and alternator cost from the dealer you bought the rig from. If they are nice, they'll cover the labor costs as well but that's a bonus. All dealers know that old JDM batteries will take out the alternator in a short order, so you're SOL if the originals are left in in the first place. Prevention of a dead van on the side of the road is key to this formula.

I would rip out the excess wiring and turbo timer. That should remove some of the wiring unknowns for the future.
