Timing/balance belt question

Post by SunshineCoastMark »

I got my timing/balance belts and tensioner pulley done at 120,000 by a local shop that specialize in JDMs , today it has 183,000 and I was about to tackle the annoying oil leak from the valve cover , when I removed the timing belt cover to get the valve cover off I noticed that the balancer belt is snapped in half and just sitting there , what could have caused this , any ideas ? Thanks.

Oil leaking on either of the belts (or water) can cut the longevity greatly. Where did you get the job done? This is why they are covered. Is there an oil leak on the front oil seal? Because that will leak onto the belts, had a similar issue when I first purchased the Miss Lil' Bitchi.

Check the engine manual in the "L300 Dedicated Category Reference Forum" in Delica Canada Technical.

after market belts are know to have an iffy lifespan.

cracking can lead to it snapping

Check/replace the tensioner and pulley prior to replacing the balance belt.

No signs of oil or water leaking on the front just the typical oil leak from the half moon seal on the back of the valve cover , I did have to go back a day or two after the job was done because the alt and power steering pump belts were severely over tightened , I prefer not to mention the shops name here , just that this is not the only repair that has left me feeling - anoid by this particular shop.

I wonder if they also over tightened the balancer belt? I'd replace the timing belt too when you replace the balance belt, and use the best belts you can find.
