I have them on the shelf for $275 exchange. Don`t have to wait for it to be rebuilt. Comes with 12month/20,000km warranty.

Thanks Glenn, sounds good. I would like to be running sooner rather than later. I have been out of town since it died, so I haven't had a chance to pull it out. Is it relatively straight forward? I've changed the alternator on my L300 before, but I don't even know where it is on my L400.
EDIT: think I found my answer:

Here is the order of operations:

Thanks Mardy. I'll probably pick up from CC Auto, seeing as they are on the Island. I'm still trying to make sure that I need it replaced. I was taking off the wiring bolt and it arced. I assume this is because I charged up the batteries and it is still connected. So I started it up to take a look. The voltage metre doesn't go above 12V even when I give it diesel and the battery and oil lights are on.
I guessing what I need to do is pull the fuse for the alternator, instead of disconnecting both batteries, but I had a hard time getting he fuse out. I'll go try again.

The alternator fuse is bolted into the housing, don`t pull too hard it will pull apart !!! Just pull both negative terminals and you`ll be OK
The voltage gauge will read very low for approx three minutes after start up due to glow plugs drawing so much amperage. Let the van run for a few minutes and then do a voltage check. Also we have found issues with the dual battery vans when they have an aftermarket wiring harness installed into the ignition switch (for turbo timer etc) that creates a high resistance in the ignition circuit. This in turn has caused several charging issues.
