amp install = crackly and smokey speaker

Post by after oil »

hi
i just installed a rockford fosgate z23 100w amp thats been sitting in my shop for years. i put it under the center bench seat.
RCA from stereo unit to amp
something like 10g wire with 15a fuse from the battery to the amp
14g jumped from the rear lighter wire
14g ground

rear speakers 6x9 wired in to that with speaker wire. dont know the W of the speakers , they were cheap.

turned it on with just talk radio and one speaker started to crackle and even smoke a little. i switched speakers and the other speaker crackled less and then not at all on the same channel

what is up?

Are the speakers rated for this amp?

I would guess something is toasted in your old dusty amp maybe? sending high voltage or too much signal? or shorting out somewhere?

Are the speakers new or old? Were they working ok before?

Perhaps it's mildew or old dust, like Naterade mentioned.
I sometimes get a small crackle in my port mid speaker (oval w/horn), we think it's the speaker connexion on the amp from when the first detailer sprayed it with carpet cleaner. I'm wondering if you have something like this going on? Some dampness or corrosion ~ or some foreign substance in the connectors? You can get cleaners for that sort of thing.

Regarding the magic smoke: Short at the speaker end? Or perhaps they're just not skucum enough for the new amp...

1) I'm going to guess your speakers are the cause and that they saw to much humidity while in storage. 2) would be the amp though ussually one channel goes at a time, not both at once.

Hmm... I'd be inclined to pick the amp up and drop it about one and one half inches onto a counter top and see how that affects it... or better still ~ put the tunes on (Jim Suhler & the Monkey Beat: "Bad Juju" would be ideal for this), crank em up and go for a drive up some forest main at around 80 kliks with the windows down. Kind of an Italian tune-up for the stereo with a Texas twyst to it.
