With thanks to Drumster, I believe I have fixed my leaky front sunroof. Thought I would share it for any others who might have an old gasket.
I have taken two approaches to fixing the leak. Previously, I took the overly cavalier approach and siliconed the whole thing shut. Worked great but has clear implications for functionality.
The second road taken was to revive the gasket a bit with some detailing product. Then stuff a piece of cotton string under the gasket. The string flares up the gasket enough to seal but not so much it causes problems.
So far it's working very well.
Lesson learned for me: only silicone things closed when you are confident that you will never ever ever ever open tem again. Silicone removal is a wretched task.

the string is a good idea.
this is what I've been using in the past. seems to work well on the sunroof membrane as well.

This is a tip i can really use right now. One question though. How did you get the string to stay in place on the sunroof?
Thanks,
Colin

I think he put it under the gasket to push it out a bit, not on top like in the picture.cd_photo wrote:This is a tip i can really use right now. One question though. How did you get the string to stay in place on the sunroof?

Yes the string is pushed into the seal on the interior side of the sunroof.

Ah, I get it now. Thanks! How hard is it to remove the sunroof?
