E-Brake Light stays ON.. Sometimes

Post by str8gooods »

For the past few weeks my e-brake light will remain on after I have taken off the brake. It doesn't happen everytime, and when it does, I turns off after some time driving. I did a forum search, but all topics are related to the L-300. From what they have said it can be due to the brake fluid level being low. I checked the under hood reservoir, and the fluid looks topped up and clean, although the markings are tough to read, but they same to be about half way down the reservoir and the fluid is at least 3/4 the way up. Could it be some corrosion on the switch, and if so is the switch located at the handbrake or at the rear of the truck. Its a 94 swb 2.8l. Thanks

loosen the cable and reseat the switch
also (and it never hurts) your brake sys may require a flush/bleed

I've had this happen three times for two different reasons. The first time was because of a leak in my brake line. The second and third was due to over-tensioning the e-brake cable. There's a button under the brake levee which sends the message for the light to turn off. If the cable is tight and causing the handle to be up slightly you won't notice any braking effects but the light will come on.

Have you checked your brake fluid level? If your fluid level is low the light will come on.

Let me rephrase that: In my experience an intermittent brake warning light has been fluid related. The fluid being low enough that although it looks high in the reservoir ~ when the vehicle is on a hill or making a turn then the fluid moves enough to affect the sensor. If the markings are difficult to read, have you tried using a flash light to read them?

The diaphragm in the cap of the fluid reservoir is touching the fluid. Although I have never seen a reservoir with a cap of this style, from what I can tell it is full.

When it comes on, disconnect sensors until it goes out?

So it seems that removing the reservoir cap cap and re-inflating the diaphragm has solved the issue. It has not come on since. Maybe the flout was stuck. Either way, thanks for the help guys.

No worries, Str8goods but I'm curious ~ I don't know all the ins and outs of the Pajero ~ are you saying that there is a diaphragm on the brake reservoir cap? I don't have that one on my Starwagon but I did have that on previous vehicles and as I recall the diaphragm should be collapsed when the brakes are bled and reset and when the diaphragm opens out it's because the fluid is getting low, thereby creating a vacuum that is opening the Diaphragm. Are we on the same page here or am I misreading something?

Just keep checking the master cylinder to see if the rubber is starting to go. I lost my clutch master cylinder diaphram 2 years ago. I think the rubber portions of this truck start to go on these trucks after a while.

cheers,

JR
