So you got it started by the sounds of things...

Yrs ago I was given a trick with starters...bang them lightly with a hammer to get them to work. That said if you're having to do that means the starter is on the way out.

Alternator or wires going from them. Something isn't connecting to something else... There's a wire going into the back of the starter. I noticed on mine it wasn't exactly tight. If it's loose you could get some funkiness...

Batteries

I've seen odd behaviour now with the batteries needing changed...power but not enough to turn that diesel beast.
And when the alternator went...

Before you rebuild the starter and the alternator, I would recommend cleaning the terminals & cable ends. A change in weather can create a vapour barrier between the battery terminal and the cable end, inhibiting the charging process. This is simple to address and a lot cheaper than rebuilds.

If it is the starter, then going by my experience ~ if you find yourself hitting the starter to get the solenoid happening, it usually means that you have roughly six more starts left. At least with the Chevy engines. Also, I would avoid cranking the starter for more than 30 seconds as it over heats the brushes, especially on our vehicles as they crank faster.

Another potential scenario is your battery(ies) is on it's way out. Cold is famous for killing any weak batteries.

ok found the problem! it was just a bad ground to the frame, i guess the starter takes so much juice that it killed the poor connection that was there. so new cables tomorrow and I will be set!

Thanks

Joe

Oh and to test the problem I just took the jumper cable from the neg terminal on the battery to a bolt on the frame and it started right up.
