Oil Catch/Intake!!

Post by .:FoRuM56:. »

Yesterday I finally finished putting my intake together, Figured I would try something that might breathe easier. Plus I like wrecking what was originally good!

So the filter is an AFE element I picked up at a local diesel rice shop. Dimensions are about 7" Tall / 7" Top / 8" Base / 4" Flange.
I used some oddball couplings that could only be sourced from ebay, going from a 4" flange to a 2" in such a limited space is a challenge, but I could have just got a smaller filter too...nahh lol. Grabbed a chunk of 4" PVC and some fancy 3" aluminum pipe. Required a little test fitting but turned out A OK!

I just wanted to try out a catch tank. I figure I'll see what goes through it during daily driving, I know these diesels can cough up quite a bit into the intake track. (well mine does)
I chose to go with a Moroso, since it was one of the nicer units the shop had, baffled properly with quality parts. BILLET! ooooh!
A little more expensive but I dislike cheap parts.

Anywho, a picture of the setup un-installed and installed!

So far with the intake, I've noticed a drop in all around EGT's. It's breathing almost too easily, Boost is staying within check thankfully, but far less smoke under full load. With the fuel being constant the extra air is leaning out the mixture, so I see it as a potential to bring on a little more fuel = little more power.

My fuel load cone is damn near at it's most radical point and I've tossed the 6mm spacer so I can achieve full drop off the diaphragm. The star-wheel was also lowered to allow for easier drop. Time to uncork the fuel load screw possibly.

Only thing I dislike about the intake is the noise, being under full boost a majority of the time just produces a hiss, and the engine has a more "tractor-esk" sound to it. But I've driven about 200kms today and nothing happened out of the norm aside from the lower EGT's, so fingers crossed!

Cheers
James

Ooooo, look at all that shiny metal stuff......I was looking at doing the cone filter too but the constant intake hiss would bother me....it needs to be muffled in an enclosure for my purposes.

I like the catch can, what was the cost on that unit?

It was around 150 bucks.

I just need a larger turbo, that'll take care of the hiss! :-D

Time for an update.....just bow much oil has been dropped in the can since you did the install?

You got me into checking out Catch Cans since I read this post.....shiny billet makes me smile too but it needs to have proper purpose.

Make sure you don't get a kink in the tubing, a kink is what destroyed my valve cover gasket for the third time. :-D

And on the same vein make sure that the inlet/outlet size on the can and the tubing used has a suitable inner diameter. Most of the off the shelf catch cans are meant for cars and have inlet/outlets that are too small and will lead to the same result Nxski has witnessed.

Made a stop in to Mopac Performance over the weekend and started to ask about the pros and cons of Oil Catch Cans.

Pros
Catch oil vapors and condense them there by reducing oily build up on the intake stream and any related components.
Reduce sludge/carbon build up on the head and valves.

Cons
Requires proper placement for optimal performance, Mopac recommends placement that ensures the can will be warm while the engine is running.
Catch can should not be equipped with a breather filter for diesel applications as the engine fumes can collect under the hood.
Lines to and from the can must be inspected for kinks, damage collapsed spots or fluid blockages.
The connection points on the can should the same inside diameter as your OE ones on the engine to ensure proper vapor flow.
Catch can must be properly secured to prevent metal fatigue related cracking on thinner cans.
Don't trust the fluid level tube as vapor locks in the tube are common and will give false readings, check the can at every oil change and drain.
