L400 stalling

Post by tandrew*2009 »

My 1994 L400 has started stalling within a few minutes after starting. It lets out a big puff of smoke when it restarts and then it runs fine. I'm thinking that the seal on the fuel pump is going. I took it into Japanoid and they said there was no oil in the fuel filter so it was not the fuel pump seal. They convinced me to go with an injector and fuel line cleaning. 2 days after I got it back from Japanoid it will turn over but it won't run.

Does anybody know if there is a way to check the fuel pump without having it removed?

And has anybody else had problems with Japanoid? They put in a new fuel filter and new air filter. both had less than 20k km on them and I had checked the air filter a month before and it was fine. I run deisel kleene with a cetane boost every other tank

I have a set of white running boards and bumpers free to a good home. There is a little bit of rust and a small dent in the rear bumper but they are in good shape.

I don't know why you would have oil in your fuel filter!? Oil in the oil filter and fuel in the fuel filter. Maybe there's air in the system? IP seal going? I don't know much about L400's but I see these problems posted constantly.

From what I remember, a leaking Bosch pump allows diesel into the oil and oil into the diesel. Sort of like how a leaking head gasket lets oil into the coolant and coolant into the oil. Now, I am not 100% on this, it all from memory.

One of the trucks recently discussed on the forum in another thread is using stop-leak oil in your diesel tank when it is very low to plump up the leaky seal. It might be a good test for you.

On the 4M40 engines the common stalling issue is that when the front seal of the injector pump starts to degrade it will allow diesel to spill out of the pump and into the timing cover and will then draw in crankcase gasses (mostly air) into the pump. The crankcase gasses is what causes the stall. I don't know how the oil could find it's way back to the fuel filter, but a better way to diagnose would be to check the oil level on the dipstick. If the level has gone up a bit, then you are getting fuel into the oil through the front seal.
