Hello everyone,
I need to replace my cv drive shafts and could only find used ones in Canada that need to be rebuilt.
I found some in Australia brand new, but need to know if I have 25 or 28 spline version in order to order the proper shafts.
I told the company that I had no idea and they told me the only way to find out was to take it out and count the splines.
Im not overly mechanically inclined, dont have the space (garage) or really want to do it in the dead of winter in Northern Ontario. Its snowy and cold.
I also dont want to pay a mechanic the hours in labor to rip them out and count them for me. I already had to pay to have them pulled out and put back in after they could not be rebuilt.
Can anyone help me figure out what the spline count is without ripping the shafts out or do i have to take them out to find out.
Thank you for your time every one.
Adam

Just pop the cover off the hub and the stub of the axle be held in with a circlip and you can count the splines from there. All you need is a screw driver to pry the cap off and a small hammer to re-install the cap.
As far as replacing the axle goes, the right side is fairly easy, but the left side requires dissassembling most of the front end.

Thank you for taking the time to help Dino, I really appreciate it.
I have read on the uk sight that the outer splines are all 28 but it is the inner spline number that varies from 25-28, Have you ever heard this?
quote from uk site
"all right hand shafts are the same , the left can have 2 types , depends on which front differential you have. one is 25spline inner , other is 28spline inner. both of these have 28 spline outer , its only the inner that changes."
I have also found this info in regards to the stamp on the diff housing.....can anyone confirm or deny this?
Quote from uk site
"cast into the top / upper surface of the diff housing you will see KN4 or KN5 . you may need a strong light , mirror , or take a picture to read it.
KN4 is the 25 or small spline , KN5 is the 28 or large spline."
and
Quote from uk site
"25 tooth splines are for the 7.5 inch diffs ( KN4 housing ) . thats most of us .
28 tooth splines are for the 8 inch diffs ( KN5 housing ). applies to the 5 speed manual models"
Thanks again,
Adam

That I'm not familliar with, the only way to count them at that point would be to pop the axle off the diff enough to get to the splines. I'm not sure how deep the splines are, but if the axle plunge action is long enough you should be able to just pop the inside end out of the diff far enough to count without having to dissassemble the front end.
If you can find a marking on it to identify the axle then that would be your best bet.

Hello everyone,
I just want to confirm that the ( KN4 diff housing ) is indeed the "25 tooth splines"
all worked out well
Ordered my axles brand new from here http://stores.ebay.com.au/suzukisuper
Hope this helps anyone in this situation in the future.
