Your oil consumption

Post by robbieg »

Just did a check on my oil, and it was a little lower than I would have expected (not extreme, just a surprise)

So. Did some digging around the site, found this:
http://www.delica.ca/forum/4d56-lubrica ... 12202.html

I have a 4M40, but I'm doing better than 1L/1000km.

What's your oil usage like? Never had a diesel before, and don't know if they sometime use a little more oil because of (compression|heat|other).

I'm running 0W15 (or something crazy thin.... Manitoba dudes!), so I don't know if the viscosity might make the oil disappear at a faster rate too?

I've never had to add oil between oil changes - true for three different diesels over 5 years.

I add a liter for every 6-7,000km. I have some slow leaks and with my bypass I run 15k between changes. 1L/1000km sounds like excessive leaking.

..the last L300 diesel used about 1 litre every 5000km, it had 151k on it. The current L300 diesel I have uses no perceptable amount of additional oil between 5000K changes :-D it has 181K, but my current one is also the only one I spent hundreds on repairing every external gasket on the engine. (dip stick/valve cover/oil breather bypass/IP etc..)

On my 4M40 Paj, I'm about 1/4 L consumed over 4,800kms with 5w40 synthetic. Mostly short trips (15-20mins to work and back), but occasional longer drives. There are many variables to oil consumption, but if you are going through a lot I would recommend a higher multi-viscosity oil. I do know that with the temps you see in MB you will need 0wX, so I'd try something closer to 0w30.

Yeah, I'm not a lot different than Dino... I have a 4M40 Pajero with 100k on her and it doesn't use much oil between changes (10k). I'd recommend Shell's Rotella T6 5W-40 Synthetic. It's made for diesels and gets pretty decent ratings on the sites that do that type of thing. You can pick up the 5L at WalMart for $35-ish as I recall.

Starts first time, every time even in -15-20°C... without being plugged in. I know you Manitoba types can see temps far below that, but here in the balmy Rockies, we keep it real, lol.

I am usually down 1/3 to 1/4 of a liter every 10,000km on my lwb with about 220,000km on it now. I run 0W40 year round here in Manisnowba, but like mentioned before, driving habits can make this amount vary. In our weather, and with the snow we've been having, check to make sure your air filter isn't frosted up, or the intake clogged with snow. This can cause the engine to "suck" its air from the breather tube on the valve cover, which will increase oil consumption.
