Delicas for beginners

Post by jwfchase »

Can anyone recommend a good site to learn more about the differences between the different models of Delicas (eg. Exceed vs Super Exceed, etc.) or maybe there's already a post on this site somewhere. I'm just beginning the "Find me a Delica" journey.

You came to the right place, welcome!

You'll find a lot of info in the FAQ but here's the direct link to what you're looking for:
http://www.delica.ca/forum/delica-model ... s-857.html

The people here are very helpful so don't hesitate to ask. You can also go into the links and they should take you to the UK and Australian sites which have very good info as well.

This page was a huge help... now would anyone like to add some more general differences to the list? I think I've seen a few differences on here between model years, eg. which years have reinforced side impact beams, apparently some models also have 3-point seatbelts etc?

As far as I know all Delicas made after Sept 91 has 3 point belt through out.

aug 1991 was the changeover, after that they added side impact beams, 3 point seatbelts in the rear, centre high mount brake light, rear dome light, and front map lights.
Chrome mirrors and side steps also became standard on the super-exceed trim level at that time

That's about all the differences I've noticed...

I thought I might have seen something about some models having a limited slip differential? And are the seat belts, brake lights etc on all post '91 Delicas or just S/Exceed?

those features should be on all Delicas.

Limited Slip Differential was an option that was only on specific vehicles, there's no way to tell by the model unless you have the actual model number off the VIN plate. beyond that it can be identified by a sticker on the rear diff.

Hi, mostly the latest 1992 delica i think from Aug 1992 to present, super exceed has Limited differential, but if you need to check its easy just lift the delica in the hoist & from there you can see.

I think I have a LSD on my in transit van as it is a Dec 92 Super Exceed.....being a newbie to the old school 4wd, what does having the LSD do?

And, to the original post.... so far I have been very happy with my Japan based exporter, as soon as the boat lands and I get the van over to Vic I'll be sure to post about the process.

normally when one wheel loses traction all the power goes to that wheel and it just spins, LSD lets some slippage happen (it needs to in order for proper cornering) but locks up when enough slippage happens so that power goes to both wheels when one wheel slips.

So that makes driving on a wet road in 4wd mode possible without messing anything up?? Or is it more applicable to off road situations?

It's a rear LSD, so it does not affect the front wheels, and therefore does not help with driving on bare pavement in 4WD. Think of it in terms of North American vehicles with a "positrack" rear end.

I think someone else mentioned that there is no clutch between the front and the rear and that is where the issues with 4x4 and dry payment come in.
