I am in the middle of building a new custom roof rack for my L300. its 10' x 3' and is going to sit on the right side of the roof as well as build a custom ladder that goes down the right side of the van and tucks in under the rear right wheel well and on the left side im going to put a roof top carrier thats 9' x 1.5' that is water proof and locks.
my question is, is there a what im going to describe as a "steel mesh blanket" that you can buy? kinda like snow tire chain but obviously larger that i can toss on top of my jerry cans, cooler and what ever else i choose to throw in there and then run a wire cable thru the loops im going to be welding to it and lock the 2 ends together so nothing goes missing while im sleeping or away from camp.
iv tried searching it but im not sure what its called but im sure it must exist. is there any other options or ideas that any of you guys are using? i thought about locking tie downs but not sure that that is the right way to do it just because you could slide the cooler out or simply cut thru it with pocket knife. looking for something a but more secure. I could build a locking top for it but that would be bulky and would have to be a one size fits all. doesn't seem practical.
thanks
Travis

Buy a roll of cable, go to princess auto and buy the cable crimping tool, get a big case of beer and some pizza, start making a net! All the backpack one is made of is just thin cable crimped together.
