Seeking Roof rack advice...for surfboards

Post by eheyrman »

I'm looking for advise on how to rig up my crystal lite roof with a rack that can hold a few surfboards and possibly a bit of gear for our upcoming ride down the coast. Any thoughts?

Thats an easy one, wait until Feb when im back from japan and have it made, so far the problem with a highroof van and more with a crystal lite is the height of Currently available brackets , they dont clear our roofs, so they are strategicly placed between the glass to push down our roofs a bit and that leads to cracks and leakage. and really they are pretty weak racks any way, take a look at these picts, one set of racks came in on a van and there were BAD wear marks on the roof from the brackets as they pushed the roof down almost an inch and they are only rated to hold 50lbs. per bracket. SO we made these ones, each bracket has so far held 500 lbs EACH and clears our crystal lite roofs. so if you want a roof rack that will last and take some abuse. Im back in feb and we are allready taking orders , "nothing beats a great rack"

We also just made a set for the P25 low roof van, but I dont have access to the picts while im overseas.

This is the roof that comes with my van. I haven't seen one before so I don't know how readily available they are but seems like you could fit a few short boards in it along with most of your gears.

The only problem with this roof is that l'll never be able to make it into any underground parking. Being from Vancouver that could become a nuisance... Time will tell (if l ever receive it! I HATE the wait).

I agree, it's nice to have a removable rack system if you are riding the ferries often, otherwise you get that damn over height charge (for me it is another $25 in each direction). I got a used Thule rack and basket with high towers for $125. It gives plenty of clearance for my crystal lite roof, makes me wonder if I could have gotten away with a regular tower for the rack.
