I opened up the compartment underneath the backside of the drivers seat and notice that there were two open pipe ends. I'm wondering if anyone knows the purpose of both as well as if in fact they should be open rather then being connected.
Appreciate your time!

As the links say, though it looks like there is a missing piece, it is, in fact, a way to keep the dust and debris out of the intake. Think of the cavity underneath the seat as an air chamber, a pre filter, if you will. Major, heavier than air debris will fall out and not be swept up into the intake, clogging the filter prematurely.

That chamber also serves as a snorkel, as was demonstrated by Mystery Machine in 2007: http://www.delica.ca/forum/mystery-mach ... -1859.html. Certainly good for fording a creek.

if I am not mistaken, that is a pipe from the air canister to the turbo....might explain very poor MPG, excessive black smoke at times, 70km uphills...

Re: Missing pipe under drivers seat?
They come stock that way. One pipe is from the air intake in the front of the wagon, you can see part of that pipe in the driver's side wheel well. it empties out into that chamber. The purpose of that pipe is to provide air to the air intake. The reason why it is not directly connected is so if you're, say fording a deeper water crossing, maybe three feet deep and those pipes were connected with a hose then the water would go right into the air filter. Instead the water spills out before it gets to the filter. The pipe at the other end of the chamber is pretty much a snorkel. It dips down into the secondary trap that's equipped with a one way valve. This trap is for the heavy particulates and water that got past the first trap. The air passage then turns upward, into the filter element (the paper part) and on through the pipe that crosses into the engine compartment, where it dips down into the turbocharger.punkrawker wrote:if I am not mistaken, that is a pipe from the air canister to the turbo....might explain very poor MPG, excessive black smoke at times, 70km uphills...
Regarding the black smoke: This is because the fuel to air ratio is rich with diesel and not enough air. This could be because of a faulty turbocharger but is more likely because your air filter element is dirty or the fuel screw on the injector pump (IP) is set too high for the mixture. The black smoke is actually soot, unburned diesel. For instance ~ when you start your Delica the IP automatically dumps extra diesel into the combustion chamber to insure that compression takes and your wagon starts up. This is why you see a little puff of soot coming out the tail pipe when you start.
It's all based on balance between what comes in and what comes out. These are amazing machines that can generate 86 ponies and move two tonnes of wagon up a hill. Don't expect to pull wheel stands with these wagons, they're not that kind of machine ~ if you want to do that you should consider dropping a V8 into the wagon, like this guy:

The thing I love about the plumber is that it's his daily drive, his work van. I could just see it: After he did the nine second quarter mile, he probably went off to Missus Jones's to repair her khazi for her and while he had his head under the cistern he was telling her about his conquest down at the strip and she was probably commenting on his imagination.
