Tachometer connection

Good morning/day/night everyone!

After my ordeal in Newfoundland with the head gasket, I went ahead and got the mechanic to change the timing belts and all. One belt was already cracked. To the best of my knowledge, he did a good job. No more oil leaking. So, I am not complaining about him or the work, I just want to understand.

When I pick it up, the tachometer was not working (it flickers once in a bump or when idling) . The mechanics said it had nothing to do with the work he did. The ECU stopped working (as well) and there was a few wires corroded underneath the driver seat. It was just the side door sensor which I fixed. I installed a temp wire for the glow plug. So he said the tachometer not working might just be a wire.

So I looked up on the forum, removed the instrument panel and played with the wires while the engine running... nothing.

So my question is; Where is the tachometer wire connected to on the other end? Or could the problem still be behind the panel?

And by the way, since the repairs in Newfoundland, it happened a few times that the starter was not working. Could that also be a wire?

The tachometer sensor is on the engine side of the injection pump, towards the front- it has two wires which run to a white connector. The connector has a weak retaining clip, and is easy to unplug. The wires can also break.

From the white plug the wires go up to the black square and triangular connectors atop the injector pump- if one (or both) of those was unplugged it would account for both the tach and ECU not working.

Found the problem. Turns out the mechanic did not connected the ground to the engine where it<s suppose to be. So now I have to either find the proper bolt to fit in, or rewire to another ground.

I will also test the ECU afterward to see if it was also the same problem.
