Most Delicas have the "super quick glow circuit"- no warning light on the dashboard, just wait for the second click before starting. I'm curious about what the normal range of times between clicks is, as it seems to be a recurring theme and isn't well documented.

It would be great/super nerdy if, next time you start your engine from cold, you counted the number of seconds between clicks and reported back here. I guess we also need to know air temperature at the time and whether there's anything unusual about your setup (aftermarket glow plugs, it's running poorly, lots of smoke, etc)

I'll start:

3 seconds @ 20C (Stock glow plugs, running well)

35 seconds @ -5C (Stock Green Cap brand new Glow Plugs, was the same timelaps with old ones). A bit of choke help but running well as ever)

Notes: If restart when engine warm, will take about 20 seconds for second click then a 3rd one right after starting to mark the smoth iddling. Temperature sensor changed recently. No electrical-mods work since longer second click timelapse: had usual 3-6 seconds seconds click before or when engine warmed.

Update: Here are my Engine Temperature Sensor readings: where it should read 1.8 mine is 0.81, 5.83 mine = 3.85, 0.9 mine = 3.05, Engine at garage temperature = 20C.

1990 Starwagon 6V system 4D56 TD

My time is 6 sec. from freezing cold to + 40C . When it's cold I get additional operations for a few minutes until the engine runs a bit. If I use my block heater when cold I will get 1 or 2 additional clicks @ most even if it's really cold. It's been that way since I bought it. I have the Mitsubishi green top glow plugs. I replaced the original green tops a few years ago as 1 was faulty. No change it time just smoother starts.

4 seconds at 4*C!

Although that doesn't seem ample because it takes 2-3 tries to get it started. :(

The other day @ -15'c. It took 10 sec for the second click!!! And I also had my block heater connected.

4 seconds @ 9C.

-35 celcius...6sec to second click... I do this 4 times... starts every time... When I do not have it plugged...

25 celcius...6sec to second click... Starts on its own!!!

That's odd. Are you sure yours is a super-quick glow system? Does it have a glow plug indicator light on the dashboard?

It's been super hot in Victown and I'm getting no click. Even this morning, no click couple of turns and screams to life. After work sitting in the heat, probably 25+, no click, half a crank and boom.

I even cycled the ign on and off to see if I could hear something; nothing.

I just ran it again today. More like 10 deg and still no click. Left it for around 10 seconds. Still fired up after a few revs. I distinctly remember the clicks happening before I took it for longer drives. Now nothing. Me thinks that something is up.

Temp sensor is fine as i'm getting gauge readings.

Sorry if this is a bit of a thread hijack. Any Thoughts?

The gauge reading and glowplug sensing parts of the sensor are independant. It's entirely possible for one to fail and not the other, though I'd look for a loose connection first.

Back in December it was 10 seconds. What's changed?

Back then I had a Timex!!! I now have a Rolex!!!
