melted fuse box l400

Post by Beausoleil74 »

What are the odds I can just take the fuse out and use this? I mean after I try to figure out why this melted. Was it a boost that caused the surge?

You should be ok to just replace it, as long as you've found the fault that caused it and repaired it. The last time I saw heat damage like that it was from someone connecting the boost cables backwards.

(On push-in fuses, heat can soften the spade terminals and cause a loose connection. Those big fuses are bolted in though, so should be immune from heat damage.)

I'm so confused now. I'm going back in my mind. I don't think I connected them backwards but what else could it have been. I did hook it up to the post and not to ground. There was no big spark. It wouldn't boost if they were hooked backwards would it?
Was I dumb enough to hook it backwards? Shit

Not even briefly? Just take care when reinstalling them, you might have a short circuit somewhere else then. Have a look for any large power cables that have rubbed through the insulation.

Hang on, is the fuse actually blown? If the fuse is OK then it's probably just a poor/corroded/loose connection. Take the fuse out, clean up the contacts, and reassemble.

I just took a look the fuses never blew. The melting sourse was below the first fuse. I suppose I should get a new fuse box.

I did boost the Delica it was a cheap set of Cables and went off the posts. Wouldn't turn over so I dumbly started the boosting car and took about a minute or two for delica to start. I'm ashamed. Do you think this did it? Will inspect wires as you suggested.

I'm guessing both sides used to look the same.

Even briefly? I'm doubting myself now. I've never done it before 95% sure it was hooked up correct

I've done more reading about L400s with melty fuses (I googled "Mitsubishi L400 melted fuse box").

It appears the problem is sometimes another circuit that's drawing too much current. Diagnosing the cause can be tricky if you're not electrically inclined. It might be time to visit an auto electrician.

(Also: if you change the thread title to "melted fuse box" or similar you might get a response from someone who has had the same issue- I only looked in here in case it was spam ;-))

Thanks for the advice. Thread name changed.

Found a used fuse box but will try to track down the cause before I install it. I thought it may have something to do with the boost but from what you said it most likely is something else. Hopefully someone who has had the same issue might steer me in the right direction.

Other than the fuse for the daytime running unit melting months ago (just took it off and everything was good)and then left the lights on over night boosted the Delica, I haven't had any strange issues.
