Stranded in Steamboat CO transmission siezed
Currently in Steamboat Springs Colorado with a siezed transmission. Looking for a 5 speed V5M21 transmission for a 1989 L300 or whatever is compatible. Also looking for a mechanic or transmission shop around steamboat that isn't scared of delicas.

If it helps, a KM145 should also fit (and may be easier to find, being fitted to some Dodges), but has a weaker 5th gear than the later V5M21.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Hi Jordan
Most V5M21 are stick shift type which only helps if you can swap innards to the original L300 gearbox.
For a clean gearbox swap you would need an L300 (also 2WD gearbox should fit) or a Hyundai H100 "Grace" gearbox, if it has cable shifter; a guy has done that in Mongolia. Petrol engine and Diesel engine L300 have the same gearbox.
Is the seized box beyond repair? If you are lucky only some shaft bearings and/or the pilot bearing behind the flywheel are gone. The pilot bearing has to be replaced in any case when you fit any replacement gearbox, else the joy will not last long.
All the best
Andy

Re: Stranded in Steamboat CO transmission siezed
It's siezed in 4th. 1,2,3,5,R don't engage. Found a shop willing to work on it but they haven't looked at it yet. So I'm probably looking for a rebuild and a clutch kit for a 1989 Montero(?). Is there something available domestically that has a stronger 5th gear that would work?

Second shop says trans is fine but the clutch is gone. Any domestic vehicles share a clutch? Mechanic says the gas Montero has a different clutch from its diesel counterpart.

Clutch fixed, transmission was pooched too so was being rebuilt with km145 guts but the input shaft is too long. Need part# MD725078. Anything domestic compatible?

Re: Stranded in Steamboat CO transmission siezed
Here's a link to all vehicles Mitsubishi made that used that part: http://www.partsbase.org/parts/mitsubishi-md725078/,
Looks like it was used in a couple of Mitsubishi US models, '83-'91 Montero with the 2.6l engine and rear leaf springs (model L042G) and the '86-'96 Truck with 2.4l engine and 2WD (models K05T and K15T)
I'm curious about what actually broke in the transmission. It sounds like something jammed and damaged the input shaft, which would explain the seizing up and inability to select gears. That would have been very exciting- for certain definitions of "exciting".

Re: Stranded in Steamboat CO transmission siezed
Thank you, looks like those trucks share a part number but the mechanic or myself can't find MD725078 anywhere in North america, is there a resource for part number cross reference?Growlerbearnz wrote:Here's a link to all vehicles Mitsubishi made that used that part: http://www.partsbase.org/parts/mitsubishi-md725078/,

I am also curious what broke... it has been very 'exciting', from limping the van for 5 hours in 4th gear to a town with a mechanic willing to work on it to 'extending' my stay in Colorado from 1 day to 18 days (and counting...).
Thanks for your help.

I don't know of any cross reference. The Dodge part number is the same.
