The trip up north/ How full can you pack a Delica?

We had a great move up to Smithers on New Years Day. Here's the Delica at the base of the Ski hill.

Then we took a drive over to terrace to do a few errands, and low and behold a sign to Alaska! I love it up here.

Here is some video of our stuffed little Delica, we fit most of what we owned in it. Quite the move, 1250km and some pretty good mountain climbs. Sorry James, we swung through Williams Lake around 11pm, didn't think you would appretiate a call that late.

A few of the things that came out of the Delica as we unpacked it.

Hi Josh,

Are you sure you live in Canada and not on another planet?? :?

That snow and scenery is the stuff of other worlds to me! Jaw droppingly stunning and just what I've always wanted to 'put up with' compared to damp and miserable England!

It's great to see you discovering the inner (or should I say hidden) strengths of the Deli! Who'd ever have imagined being able to pack away so much stuff! 8) 8)

I noticed the 'emergency' bottle of wine at the very front of the gear that would be the first thing removed/opened at the end of the trip! Wise thinking and very much the sort of thing I would do (although from past experience, I hope you kept the corkscrew nearby and not packed in the middle of all the stuff! )

I'm glad to hear you made the move OK - it looks like quite an adventure in itself! I assume the Deli took the trip and all the luggage in its stride?

I won't for one minute try and hide my envy....

....just looking at the photo by the Alaska sign/gas station makes me think there is nothing mundane or ordinary about your country when it comes to scenery and weather! 8) 8)

Keep us (me! :D ) updated about your adventure, good luck with your new life and new home and please feel free to post more photos....

Regards for now,

Bruce.

Bruce,

I couldn't sleep, so here are a couple pics we just took in my new "backyard". I am sure you will be on your way over the pond in no time, it is even prettier in person. Sorry no Delica shots, I was driving all nice and cosy inside it at the time. Enjoy. (I am glad to be back in the snow and out of the rain).

Oh and I just about forgot, I must give my wife, Rose, credit for the pretty scenic pictures. She is a lot better with the camera than I am.

Have no doubt - I REALLY want to move over there!

As mentioned before though (somewhere on here?) it's my girlfriend that I need to convince more than anything! I keep regularly dropping hints about the snow, scenery, pace of life etc...over in Canada and I hope that, in time, she will gradually start to accept the inevitable!

She does love the idea of it, but it's getting her to realise I actually mean it, and getting her to actually WANT to do it is a different matter! (the photos will certainly help though so please keep 'em coming!  )

The other BIG issue is that I really don't think I could part with the Mystery Machine! :( After the four years of hard work getting it to where it is, I'm not sure I could substitute it with anything else! The 15yr import issue I could deal with (store it at a freinds for a year or two, then ship it over) but the 25yr thing is another matter!

I won't hi-jack your thread with my dilemma any longer, but have started a new one HERE about my wishes to move over to your wonderful country! :D

Back on topic now....

.....Thanks again for the wonderful photos......picture postcard stuff, yet you get to live in it.....FANTASTIC!!

MORE MORE MORE.....

Regards,

Bruce.

the 25 year thing hasn't happened yet... and there's no guaruntee that it will... it just means we have to be vigilant and expose the idiocy of it to those in charge... keep your fingers crossed and it will never come to pass. and the mystery machine can be here in 2 years...

well... depends on the actual day of manufacture, 15 years exactly...

but of course if you want to play in that kind of snow you'll have to choose somewhere other than Vancouver... their climate is more what you're used to... you get more snow if you go north or east....

NO WAY!! I've just checked my import documents, and the date given was Sept '92 - so that means I'd only need to 8 months!

I'm not sure how that could be though because the reg plate assigned to the car is a 1993 and the date on the label on the seatbelts is '93 too! (this label gives you the TRUE manfacture date! ) If it means I am able to bring the motor into the country much earlier though.....I'm not gonna complain! :D :D

But that is what road trips/holidays and blasts into the countryside are all about!

Heck guys - if I come over, I'll just have to whip up one of my meets to get you all together for some good old UK stylie adventures! :D :D

Regards,

Bruce.

P.S. Why hasn't anyone sorted a meet yet?? It only takes one of you to arrange, two of you to make it a meet!....

I organised the first UK deli meet 4yrs ago and there were only 3 Deli's there. The next one I did, 30+ turned up.....one of mine this year had 96!!

Don't think about it.....JUST GET ON WITH IT! :D

P.P.S. Sorry Josh........back to the topic of you moving and Rose's amazing photography! :D :D

I believe the import regs for TC look at the frame build date. If the frame was Jan 17/92, then she'd be good to land today.

it is common practice in the auto industry to manufacture a vehicle before the model year for that vehicle, they start selling the next model year in show rooms 4-6 months before new years so obviously those vehicles were manufactured in the year before the "model year" they represent, therefore a large portion of any model year would be manufactured before said year (as in your example of a 1993 model delica that was made in 1992) the laws look at manufacture date, not "model year"

Hey Josh,

Glad your trip went well. Knowing the drive you had, I figured that you would be through Williams Lake at a time other than what you had planned. :D

Where in Smithers did you find a place? Those photos all bring back memories as those spots look very familiar :D

I am planning my spring fishing trip for Houston west, so maybe we can have a northern Deli Club meet.

James,

I have a place right in town, Fourteenth Ave. which is a great location. However i am crammed in an appartment. I am looking for land right now, hope to buy before the fall. A northern Delica meet would be great, and so many great drives. In fact everyone from down south could convoy up, or even all take the ferry. What a site that would be, a ferry full of Delicas. We will definatley have to bump into eachother when you are in Houston.

All the storage space, plus the versatility of these vans (as well as the fact they are so damn good looking) is what keeps me VERY interested in them. Right now, packing my drumkit into the back of my less than waterproof and "hard on the knees" LWB 1988 Toyota pickup is getting to be a real pain.... :(
