Auto kickdown cable setting.

Lately my automatic had been shifting harshly from 1st to 2nd, and felt like it was slipping in 2nd. Then yesterday it refused to shift out of 1st when cold for about a minute.

Time for a transmission rebuild? Panic. Check bank balance. Panic more.

Luckily it turns out the kickdown cable ("throttle cable" in Mitsubishi workshop manual speak) had come loose. Readjust it and all is lovely again. Phew!

For the record, here's how it's done:

First pull back the orange boot and check that the inner cable stop has 1-2mm of free play when the accelerator is at rest. Adjust by loosening the two 10mm bolts on the linkage and lengthening or shortening the linkage.

Now hold down the accelerator as far as it'll go, check that the cable stop is 34-35mm from the inner cable (as pictured). Adjust using the two 14mm adjusting nuts on the outer cable. Re-check and adjust the first measurement- you may need to go back and forth a few times until both measurements are correct.

Done! (Though Murphy's law says that my transmission will probably grenade this afternoon, since I've posted this.)

If you adjust the length of the lever (using the two 10mm bolts to shorten it) you can make it so you get 1mm free play at idle, and 32mm at full throttle- that'll make it so you don't kick down until *just* before full throttle. (I found the standard adjustment of 35mm to be too sensitive).

My measurements seem to be within spec; 35mm @ full throttle, ~2.5mm at rest. Measuring the smaller one is a little difficult, but it's under the 2.5 mark on my metric ruler ...

I'm having trouble finding which 10mm nuts do the adjusting. The larger 14mm adjusting nuts are obvious. I put a wrench on the only 10mm nut I can find on the linkage to point it out, but I'm not confident this does the adjustment? The two other nuts to the bottom right of the wrench are 8mm; I think they're the ones discussed in the TRL version of this post

The orange boot has ripped and the area was sprayed with oil many months ago when the dipstick came loose while driving ... will this let all kinds of nastiness into my trans?

I assume this is a separate cable w/ adjusting screw attached to the fuel injection?

Sorry, this post says "10mm" where it should say "8mm". I corrected it in the TRL verion but forgot to go back and edit the original post.

I think you've figured it out though. The 14mm nuts adjust the cable length so you set the "at rest/idle" 2.5mm, the two *8mm* bolts adjust the stroke length so you can set the full throttle 35mm.

It sounds like your cable is adjusted correctly already though. Minor adjustments don't make much difference.

What is this "free play" referring to? Like if i pull the cable towards the front of the engine compartment it will travel 1-2mm before hitting resistance? Or something completely different?

Yes, it's "slack" in the cable...
