ABS light on

Hi there. I’m having problem with ABS light constantly on. I change the battery in my 96 L400 and after this the ABS light is on. I try to read the ODB2 but it is not working any more. It looks like those two issues are related. I checked all the fuses and relays and all are good. Is anyone able to help with this problem?

Your Delica does not use OBD codes it used MUT2 which is a Mitsubishi only programming.
it's possible your ABS needs a reset which can only be done with MUT2 (Also called EVO-Scan).

The other thing which can cause an ABS sensor light is a faulty ABS pickupor cable which are on each wheel. again the MUT2 will be able to decipher the CPU and tell what's wrong.

There is no problem with the ABS sensors. As I mentioned it started after battery change. The ABS light is on and ODB2 port is death. I went to Mitsubishi dealer to read the computer, but they are not able to do it as well.

ABS light on *and* diagnostic port not behaving as expected- not a great sign. When you changed your battery, did you at any point accidentally connect it backwards, or disconnect the battery while the engine was running?

I wouldn't discount the diagnostic port just yet, the dealers around here are occasionally useless too, and we've had JDM imports for decades. Plus Mitsubishi seem to love changing diagnostic port standards at random. Have you checked for voltage on the port's pins? No idea what they should be on your vehicle, but I'm sure the information is on teh internet somewhere.

Thanks very much. Your post is very helpful. I don't think I connected the battery reverse but who knows maybe I touched some wires accidently. Do you know what would happen if i did? I'll try to figure out how to measure ODB2 port voltage. I tried to short pin 1 to the ground to received error codes through blinking light in the instrument cluster but this did not work either. Just endless blinking no codes.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough with L400 electronics to make anything other than a general guess. Usually, connecting a battery backwards will cause a blown fuse as vehicle electronics are supposed to be well protected, but older components can fail.

I'd be looking through the wiring diagrams to find any components the ABS and diagnostic port have in common. Does the engine ECU drive the diagnostic port and ABS directly? Or is there a separate body control ECU they both report to?

Does the ABS still work? Sometimes an ABS light can indicate another failure entirely- but, again, I'm not familiar enough with the specifics of L400s to know.

There is another possibility. And I have experienced this one personally.

there is a grouping of 5 shifter position switches in the automatic transmission to detect transfer lever positions.

When the transfer case is in 2WD and one of the switches fails to work it can trigger an ABS code, activate the dash light, which would deactivate the ABS system. When I shifted into 4WD the ABS light would go out and ABS would work again. Go back to 2WD and the light comes on again.

And for my NZ buddy Growler: The Gen1 L400 have a computer for the transmission which also reads the ABS system. I have done several ABS system diagnosis on my own Deli and have tracked my issues down to a failed ABS sensors at the wheels, damaged t-case lever switches and a faulty alternator... (that last one is not as uncommon as one might think).

If I can get a hand on my friends Evo-Scan I could help diagnose this issue for our Deli owner.

Any solution to this? I have the same light on and no comms to obd2. I realize this is an old post just wondering.

found and abs sensor where the wire was rubbed through. got it changed at the shop as ity was seized in there and the problem is solved for me.
