Probably a stupid question...

I have a '91 L300 RHD w/ the 6v glowplug system... it doesn't work. I've temporarily bypassed it with a PB switch to the 6v solenoid, but I'd rather have a properly functioning system.
I'm down to it being the controller or the temp sensor. But I'm having trouble w/ the temp probe.
In the above image probe #1 has a single prong, but it looks like there may have been a second one (for glow) and there is a wire for a second one that has been taped back to the harness. From what I've read this should be the glow plug sensor and should be the issue. However, with the probe disconnected (infinite resistance) I would expect the solenoids to trip... they don't.
But probe #2 also appears to be for temp and has two wires... I'd like to know how to get the darn plug off of it so I can inspect it. It has something of a rubber boot/sleeve and I cant see how it releases. I've tried pulling but it seems locked, I'm afraid to try too hard unless I'm certain that's how it is removed. Is this one for the glow plugs? The wiring colors for both do not match the schematic I found online so I'm kind of winging it.
I haven't located the controller yet. I think it is in the pillar behind the driver's seat... if it is, it's not behind the easily removed access panel...
Other issue I have is the turbo is over-boosting I think. Under hard acceleration the overpressure valve dumps. It has a replacement actuator (I was told) which seems to be free, the waste gate arm is free, and I've adjusted the actuator to about minimum (just tight enough to remove any slop). My best guess is the actuator is rated too high... I've ordered a cheap boost gauge and will see when it gets here.
