Do I need my Hood Blanket?

Hey everybody, I had an unhappy discovery yesterday while jump-starting the wife's Camry. The blanket looking insulating pad that is on the underside of the engine lid has always been tattered, but now it's shed a lot of it's material and it's all collected on the front of my Rad. Which if you remember I recently spent a good bit of time cleaning out

. Now i've got to try to get this crap out with the rad in the van.
My question is this; after I chuck the blanket I have now...do I need a new one? Is it really worth trying to run one down for sale? I figure it's for sound-damping and to retain engine heat. Anybody else take theirs off? I took the one out of my F350 as well and it seems to be fine...but the Deli is not a f350

My van didn't have one when I first got it and seemed to run just fine. I fitted a new one anyway, and was surprised at how much quieter the engine was. The centre console didn't get as hot either.

I'd line the engine cover with Dynamat and Dynaliner (or off-brand equivalent) if you intend to drive long distances.

Ok, thanks GB. I'm glad to know that it made a difference. I should've removed the thing when I got the van. It's been shedding like an allergic cat all over the engine bay. I took it off today and blew everything out with compressed air. I do plan on driving long distances regularly so i'll be putting something under there. I haven't found an OEM one online yet but i'm curious as to what they cost versus something like Dynomat.

I installed the dynamat hoodliner 11905 32x54 under the existing blanket. Got it off Amazon. It really works and is worth it. Had enough left over to place under the drivers engine panel as well.
I have sound deadened the whole driver/passenger compartment with foil backed deadener on the bare metal followed by a layer of ccf(neoprene) and a layer of mass loaded vinyl. Finally the carpet sits on top of all of it. It really quiets the whole cabin down. I treated the doors with the same layers as well. They now close with a fufilling muffled thud as opposed to the dropping of a tin can on cement.
I am in the process of deadening the rear of the van with the same layers as above along with foam insulation in the bigger cavities. I've done the same to my 93' Land Cruiser with excellent results. The best source for product and extensive explanation of "quieting" a vehicle can be found on a sight called "sounddeadenershowdown.com". I recommend it highly.

Hey Captain, thanks for the recommendation. It does get loud in the van, I doubt that the original blanket was doing anything. My hearing is sub-par these days anyway and when you add in background noise I can't hear crap. The kids have to yell to tell me things. This upcoming trip to Fl will be the test of how fatiguing the noise will be. If it's bad i'll be doing the dynamat before the next trip fo sho...
