And won't start. Ran fine all day, and was very low on gas when I parked it, then couldn't get it started. The click tells me I'm getting voltage, so I will ask a dumb question since I'm not a diesel guy (yet). I don't think I ran it out of gas but if I did would that have anything to do with the light staying on?
Sorry if it's been asked before, couldn't find anything on glow plugs close enough to figure it out.
e: i think i figured it out, i think i did run it out of gas and then probably fried the glow plug trying to start it with air in the lines. I'll report back when it starts.

That sounds like a good place to start. Not too many L300s have a glow plug light, most of the JDM models had the super-quick glow plugs which just make clicking noises.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Just realized I never posted the follow up to this.
I've had this happen twice now. I pull into the garage with the low fuel light on, running fine, then the next morning it cranks and cranks but won't start. I've since discovered that adding a couple of gallons of diesel and repriming the fuel system with the pump on top of the fuel filter fixes the problem. Obviously the better solution would be not to get that low on gas in the first place, but now I'm curious why the system loses prime at low fuel levels but doesn't when it has a more reasonable amount of fuel in the tank.

You can't really lose prime without an air leak (which usually turns into a fuel leak while the engine is running). Do you have any fuel leaks? Even tiny ones, where some component is unexpectedly greasy with diesel?
The usual culprit is the rubber fuel supply/return hoses- they start to split where the hose clamps attach them to the injection pump, fuel filter, and fuel tank. The solution is to remove them, trim the split part off, and reinstall (if they're still long enough after trimming).
Interesting that it only happens when there's low fuel though. I guess there's more head to suck air past any minor leak, but it doesn't seem like that significant a factor.
