Hello folks,

I'm working on doing the fix for the wet floor syndrome on my '93 L300. My windshield has a few pits in it, so I decided it would be much easier to do this fix by removing the windshield first and replacing it while I take care of this other job. I have a friend who owns an auto glass repair shop, and he's graciously agreed to let me work on my van while its in his shop.

I'd like to be as efficient as possible here so I'm not clogging up his garage for a long period of time. I've ordered new windshield rubber from amayama.com, This alone was $218.00 bucks!! Yikes!! But it looks good and is genuine OEM Mitsubishi. Next I went to Crappy Tire and picked up some sealant to fix the leaky seams behind the front corner panels.

After researching older posts on how to do this repair, I just want to make sure I've got the right stuff. I've never heard of butyl tape and couldn't find anything at Crappy Tire. I was also looking for Dap gutter & Flashing sealant, but couldn't find that either. I ended up buying Gutter & Downspouts sealant by LePage. It says it provides a tough rubbery seal that's permanently flexible. It also says it's self tooling (whatever that means) and it's good for metal work.

Does this sound about right? I'll see if I can find that butyl tape somewhere else. I'd like to get on this fix soon as winter is in full swing here in Southern Ontario and water is coming in right on the fuse panel:(

For the metal parts (gutters, front panel seams, etc) as long as it's a Urethane-based sealant it'll be fine. (avoid Silicone, it works but it makes future repairs a nightmare).

For the windscreen you want a non-hardening sealant, applied as a bead between the two inner flaps of the seal before installation, so it ends up like so: The seal is designed to drain water away, if you put sealant anywhere else it can clog up the drainage channels and just make the issue worse.

When you're installing your windscreen, put the rubber seal on the glass first, making sure it's totally square, and then use masking tape to hold it to the glass. You'll be installing it using a piece of string- put the middle of the string at the top of the seal (about where the rear view mirror will be), run the string around the outsides of the seal, cross the string over, and tape the ends to the inside of the glass. When you're pulling the string to flip the rubber seal over the metal aperture, don't start at one end and go around, work out from the middle, up the pillars at the same time, and finally across the top towards the centre. All this is to avoid the rubber slipping on the glass and ending up crooked- it doesn't seal well if it's crooked.

Thanks Growlerbearnz. I checked to see if the stuff for the metal seam behind the headlights was urethane based. It doesn't say anything on the tube, but I'm sure what I've purchased will do the trick.

I've seen some but not all of those links you sent, so thanks for that also. I found a link with pictures on the seam repair behind the headlight, so I printed this and will take it with me to my friends garage. He will be the one installing the windshield as that's what he does for a living. He did all my old VW Busses when I was into that scene.

So I think I'm good now that I've got everything.
