Alberta Registration (Out of Province)

Hey!

A friend of a friend is selling a Delica in great condition for a good price and I would love to potentially purchase it. However it is located in BC and I am in AB. A mechanic I emailed told me that it is currently impossible to register a JDM in Alberta from Out of Province or Out of Country. Can anyone confirm this?

Hey breelion,
Have you made any headway on this? I am in the same situation and spent the afternoon contacting shops in Calgary trying to find one that will do an out of province inspection on a van currently registered in BC. I had no luck. Some shops told me they haven't been doing inspections on JDM vehicles for several months now.

Pro-Active Automotive does Out of Province inspections.
Kensington Auto completed an Out of Province on my Delica last year.

Makes no difference if the van is coming from BC or from Japan, it is the same Out of Province inspection.
Some shops will let vans slide through without compliant headlights. Neither of the above will.

I get the impression that some of the BC shops are a little slacker with their inpsections, so just because it passed in BC doesn't automatically mean that it will pass in AB.

I'm currently in BC but moving to AB in 6 months and thinking about buying a Deli here to bring to AB, so I'd be curious about this as well!

Followed the Alberta link where I found:

" Other provincial jurisdictions, such as British Columbia, have found the risk of being involved in a collision with a right-hand-drive vehicle is 40 percent higher. "

Wasn't this UBC study debunked? I know Quebec used that study to reject RHD registrations...

My feeling (with no data to back it up so...) is that the study was based on ALL RHD vehicles, the majority of which are sports car types bought by younger men (boys). These low, fast and furious vehicles get nailed passing without clear visibility around other vehicles.
The L300/L400 are so tall with better visibility than most LHD vehicles. Other than the forward-of-front-wheel seating if the L300 (which is, face it, why they are sooo cool!), I think they are as safe as or more safe than most. IMO.
