Timing belts....
Hi there,
We are now needing to change the timing/balancing belts on our Delica. Any suggestions for recommended mechanics that are reasonably priced ?? Any horror stories ?? Thanks for all you help.

Your post doesn't say where you are. We're doing mine tomorrow or Wednesday in Calgary. As noted elsewhere in this forum probably a good time to also do the waterpump and thermostat.

Re: Timing belts....
Sorry, we are in the Lower Mainland/Vancouver area. Have gotten an estimate of approx. $800 for parts and labour, this includes water pump, 2 tensioners, timing belt, balancing belt and thermostat. Does this sound about right ???

Don't forget to do the rad hoses while you're at it:
Recommended:
ZB54BC-82, THERMOSTAT
MFMB004, TIMING BELT
GT10-140, TENSIONER
MFMB001, BALANCE SHAFT BELT
GT10-130, TENSIONER
F4223, CAMSHAFT OIL SEAL
F4224, CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL
F4225, OIL PUMP SEAL
F4226, BALANCE SHAFT OIL SEAL
MB356382, RADIATOR HOSE
MB356383, RADIATOR HOSE
VG-406K, VALVE COVER GASKET
Aim for a price about $465.00 or less for parts. $800 for parts and labour sounds pretty good to me.

You cant go wrong with our old buddy Mardy. He will look after you. Also if you are closer to N. Van, Richard and Nathan at RJD do excellent work also. Both of these are reliable trustworthy places that will treat you fair and make your deli happy.

Re: Timing belts....
Where are you going to get yours done in Calgary? I've been trying to figure out where I want to get mine done, and where I can get the parts (so I don't have to wait for the shop to get them in) (where do you get your parts from?) or even whether I should get the parts myself or what. And have you heard of anywhere in this neck of the woods that does some sort of equivalent "delica tune" that everyone on the coast is talking about?JMK wrote:Your post doesn't say where you are. Re: Timing belts....
I use a private shop, in fact I'm heading in there in about an hour and should be there for a couple of days. Best if you PM me with your phone number and I'll give you a call and explain things. This will be their first Delica so after that I can let you know how it went. I'm doing the full meal deal in terms of belts and a tune if there is enough time.

Re: Timing belts....
I had mine done at Pro-Active in the NE (near Whitehorn LRT). They got the parts in. They are the shop that Luxury Imports (my importer) uses for warranty work, so I trust them.turf'd wrote:Where are you going to get yours done in Calgary?

I too would like to know exactly what the "delica tune" entails, so I can have it done here in Calgary -- mine smokes and starts poorly.

Re: Timing belts....
Mine is still sitting in Calgary in pieces. We ran across some very interesting little problems. The Timing belt looked fine, but was stretched as far as it would go. There was a small but obvious oil leak from the oil pump seal. Upon inspecting the 17 mm sleeve that it seals, we found a deep scratch that must have been left by a ham fisted Japanese mechanic doing god knows what. The resultant small and previously unnoticed oil leak had degraded the B-Belt significantly because it lay below that level. We had to get an old 17mm piston pin, cut and machine it, and fabricate a new sleeve which was good for a day of pissing about. I'm glad that I at least didn't have to pay a mechanic by the hour to do all that. Then the inside of the radiator looked like it had a colony of barnacles and oysters in it. Rather than do an in situ flush, I pulled the rad and took it to the radiator shop and they looked after it for $50.00. Back to Calgary early next week to try and find a spot to mount the circulating heater and to finish up the job.
PS: I was able to get all the required V Belts I needed from Parts Source except for the smallest one. In the end, the only place I could find that belt was in the Furnace Belt section of Canadian Tire, it appears to be a 290. So if you have the same problem trek over to the Furnace section and you may find what you need.

You may want to try pulling the computer from the B Pillar and getting all the resistors and capacitors on the IC checked. According to John Hamilton this is often the source of this problem. If you have a neighbourhood geek they can do this job for a few bucks. If not, an electronics shop will charge about $100-150.I too would like to know exactly what the "delica tune" entails, so I can have it done here in Calgary -- mine smokes and starts poorly.
