Altinator and oil pump removal

Post by rdub »

I need to pull out the altinator to try and somehow fix a sleeve into the part that leaves the block,it looks like the bolt has worn the bore from vibrating ,I have already sheared one bolt and thats how i saw the damage to the part, the altinator moves about 1/8'' back and forth and up/down about a 1/16'' ,I would like to get in there to ream it out so i can slide a sleeve of sorts in to it. but im wondering the best way to remove it it looks like the oil pump is attached. any advice on this one would be VERY help full. :M

Keep the oil pump attached and just disconnect the lines to it - only a little bit of oil will drip out, you can put a plug in the lines once disconnected. Once you have the complete assembly removed, there are three or four small bolts holding on the oil pump for removal.

Most of these types of bushings are brass, but I don't see why stainless would not work.

This may not be the same location: If you're talking about the sleeve that the oil pump shaft fits inside of, and the oil pump seal fits over (all this is under the timing belt cover though so perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree), it is 17 mm OD, the same size as many piston pins which are the hard steel required for this sleeve. You'd have to take a piece off the piston pin to make it the right length. As the oil pump shaft is 13mm and the ID of the Piston Pin is also 13mm you'll also have to ream it out a bit so that it will slide over the oil pump shaft. So if it's the same thing we're talking about, then you can adapt a piston pin to work if the actual sleeve is not easily available. The part number for the Oil Pump seal if you need a new one is F4225, they run about $15.00.

Nope sorry wrong tree,im just talking about the bolt hole that holds the altinator to the block, the hinge if you will.its worn oval and needs to be reamed round again and a sleeve put in it. Another question i have is the proper altinator belt path can someone post a pic of it for me im not sure mine is right, just by looking at the altinator and how it has that track to slide back and forth on when you loosen the two bolts, its maxed out to the very end towards the drivers side,im thinking thats not right wich makes me wonder if the belt is running on the proper path.

Hi Rich,

Sorry I was on the wrong track with the Oil Pump, and don't have a diagram, however I can give you a head's up on the 2 largest fan belts that are the same size if you replace them, as I am currently doing. I matched up the 2 belts at Parts Source and got 2 new ones of the same part number. EVen though they are the same, in fact their diameter differs from probably an 1/8" or so. That means they cannot be equally tensioned and I may have to obtain a half dozen belts of the same number from Parts Source and just try them all until I can get 2 that match.

The moral of the story is I suspect that the OEM Mitsubishi belts may be better matched, so if you do plan to replace them with new, probably best to simply pay the extra $$ and get them from a JDM Parts supplier.
