CBC slandering WVO
On 'the Current' radio program the other day, CBC did a smear campaign against "grease thiefs". It was quite disheartening because it painted the picture of masked bandits lurking in back alleys sucking oil from bins at the expense of poor restaraunt owners, the decent recycling company, and making filthy environmental hazards.. They really pushed the right of the oil recyclers to have monopoly on this resource. They had lawyers explaining how it is illegal to suck oil out of a bin, and that the recyclers pay the restaurants well for this oil.... They never once talked to someone who collects oil, a restaurant owner, and never explained how having the restaurant put smaller batches of oil into pails, picked up more often, instead of filling a bin with festering rotten sludge that is quite unusable for a WVO system anyways, could actually be more desirable for the restaurant owner... It felt like propaganda pushing the oil recyclers interests, and really painted a foul image of good folks using the oil locally.. Just had to vent.. It might be wise to send comments to ' The Current" to help them see a better side to this story.... I wrote in telling them that 2 of 3 restaurants that I collect from chose not to use the bins because it costs them money to get it removed, so they end up throwing oil in the dumpster to avoid the expense. They were exstatic to give me the oil, because it meant avoiding a fine if they were caught putting oil in the garbage.... Kids need me, got to go....

Our society has cancer. ICBC put out an inconclusive report explaining how right hand drive vehicles are detrimental for the environment. Currently, ICBC has seven counts of fraud pending against them for writing off vehicles that were in accidents, repairing them and turning the odometer back and reselling them. A friend of mine had an accident, the car was written off, there months later saw the car driving down the road (it had certain distinguishing marks) pulled the guy over, asked him where he got it, &c., looked at the clock which said 150,0dd kilometres and told the guy just what had happened with ICBC and that when he had that vehicle the clock was at 250,0dd kilometres.

Just an FYI: I asked on a forum that is dedicated to just WVO and biodeisel about using rancid oil in WVO systems and as long as you filter it well it should work no problem.

Re: CBC slandering WVO
Grease thief?
If you ask the restaurant for permission to use their oil, then it's not stealing. If you don't ask, but simply take it, then it is theft. They may have agreements with other people who use WVO, etc. I assume it would be common courtesy to ask. If I were a restaurant owner, I hope someone would ask before taking my WVO, even if I was paying someone to take it away.
But that's me...

Re: CBC slandering WVO
In some circumstances if the grease is already in the collection company's grease bin it is no longer the restaurant's property and could be technically stealing from the collection company. Sad but trueThe Pinkfingers wrote:If you ask the restaurant for permission to use their oil, then it's not stealing.

Re: CBC slandering WVO
Probably worse than that. If the resaurant has a contract with a grease company for removal, then they likely can't give it away to you for free without being in violation of that contract. I did some digging up here and that was exactly the case.
Rothsay http://www.rothsay.ca/ is the 800lb gorrilla in the local industry, and the big deal is they offer racoon-proof bins for grease storage.

Re: CBC slandering WVO
So why don't we all band together and start a really good oil recycling co-op?
