Hi
I'm a newbie to this forum and an outsider for two reasons. I'm in the USA, and I don't have a Delica, which is a very sad thing. ;( I desperately want a Delica, though. Is it totally impossible and outrageously expensive to import one to the USA? Why can't I find any in the U.S.?
The Delica would be absolutely perfect for me and my family, which is exactly what I thought about BC when I traveled there for the first time. By the way, my first visit to Canada was a two-week stay in Pemberton with a couple of day trips to Whistler, Vancouver, and Squam...? It was Christmas and the natural splendor of BC put me into a love coma. I wish I could go to the Pemberton Music Festival. I wish I could live in BC. I wish I owned a Delica that I could drive to the music festival in!
Somebody with a soft-spot for Americans (ha ha) please help me find my way to Delica ownership in the USA.

The only way to have a Delica in the US is to have it imported by a registered importer who will have to certify that it meets all american safety standards, the other way is to wait until they are 25 years old...

As Green1 said, they need to be 25 years old for US import. The ones you saw in Canada were 15 years old.BCLUV wrote:Is it totally impossible and outrageously expensive to import one to the USA? Why can't I find any in the U.S.?

So, keep one here for your vacations? We'll make sure it gets started up and driven often so it doesnt get square tires (yahoo, Duffy Lake Road here we come). Christine.

East Coast L300 managed to find an American Delica, but it's the 2WD gasoline version of these vans - not quite the same, I should think.
Otherwise, you can find an importer to modify it to meet the proper standards (which far exceeds what we have to meet here) or wait 25 years, which isn't that far away, because you could now start looking for the 1984 models (a little different, but not much).

Re: Unsatisfied Delica Desire
Your options:
1. Registered Importer. This could cost serious money, but was done for R34 Skylines a few years ago.
2. Wait until they are 25 years old. This could take a while. And would you still want a 1992 Delica in 2017?
3. Buy an L300 Mitsubishi Vanwagon and rebuild it with JDM Delica parts. This too could cost serious money, though not as much as Option 1.
I was talking to a local importer the other day who is deluged with U.S. inquiries, and he always has to disappoint them.
...laura who thinks that Canadian vehicle import laws are needlessly restrictive too

Re: Unsatisfied Delica Desire
I know one down in California.
Dual citizenship. Owner lived in Canada for the past 2 years. Bought the Delica last year. Moved back down to CA and took the van with him.
Imported it, registered it and is driving it.
That's the only way I know of.

In the US the laws vary greatly by state, the federal law states the vehicle must be over 25 years old or be "complied" by a Registered Importer, however there are apparently some loopholes in various state regulations that may make things possible for some people in some states under some situations... unfortunately as Canadians we are far better acquainted with Canadian import rules than those of the USA...
Really your first step is to talk to a Registered Importer in the US, nobody else will know the process as well as they.
It should be noted when talking to them, in case they are not familiar with the Delica, that it is strongly related to the Mitsubishi VanWagon that was available in the US for a couple of years around 1989(ish), this may make things easier for them, though it's hard to say without more information.

I'd be curious BCLUV, what a Registered importer in the US says if you don't mind posting if you check. I was just down in Idaho last week and had much interest from the American folks where I was attending a gathering. One guy said he's seen a few in Bellingham, WA - but I suspect they were probably BC plates
